I just cleared my headlights today and was very lucky because my mom arrived home 5 minutes after I had finished resealing the last headlight. I woulda had a hell of a time explaining what I was doing to her oven.

Blueleg - The more I look at your pictures the more I regret not blacking them out.

So most of you agree that on silver cars, you should leave some amber in there? I'm not sure i would like totally cleared or blacked out.

mine are cleared... i just have amber LED's ... clear in the daytime and noticeably amber at night...:icon_mrgr

Hey Guys,

ask your BMW Dealer!

The new M6 have clear Bulbs with orange light!

I don't know it's cheaper but it's maybe easier to find!

Greetings from Berlin / Germany

Oli

US Spec are orange

techically, according to US safetey standards - cars are reqeired to have an amber reflector on the front side of the car, that reflects light even when the bulb is turned off... so clear bulbs that blink orange are only legal if you also have an orange reflector on the side of the car. (the new VW lineup is like this)

FOr what it's worth though, i had my Virginia state inspection today - and the car passed with cleared and blacked out headlights, no questions asked -- so unless you live in a really strict area you should be okay.

^ Precisely.

And remember, like brother rallispec said, that "strict area" doesn't just mean come inspection time. Instead, one should also keep in-mind how stringently your local and regional police may enforce such lighting codes - as well as if such enforcers may specially "target" any subset of vehicles with such mods.

what putting the reflector back in, but using some chrome tape(or black tape for the darked lights) to make it look smaller or alter the design of it... i thought about cutting but that may be extreme...

^dremeling the ambers isn't that far out. noticing other cars with tinted headlight lenses (not a fan) and blackouts (fan), i noticed that the ambers look more pallatable. so i figured if i could slap a good 35% tint on my ambers and cut them -- i cut them like an thin "L" about a 1/4 inch thick to run along the outer edge of the headlight. figured double-sided tape/the clips on the bottom edge would be more than enough to hold them. it didn't look terrible, but i liked 'em clear/blacked out better, so that's the way i sealed 'em.

for the blackout, i used one coat of universal black, and topped it off with a dusting/half coat of cast iron coat (DE1651), then gently wiped the loose spray off. result is a really good (i think) approximation of the factory charcoal color already in there; if i didn't know, i wouldn't be able to tell where one ends/other begins. at least it matches my filthy car right now :icon_wink .

Did mine today, went a slightly different route. Kept in the orange bulbs and painted just the very edge. While I do think the fully blacked out look is nice, it's a little over the top. I wanted something that looked factory, and I think I got it.

Word of warning... don't f up like I did. When I was putting the drivers side back together I didn't press the corner together all the way. I was going to just let the screws pull it tight... yeah, guess what, screws in hot plastic don't grip very well. So when I put it back on my car there was a good 5+ mm gap between the car and the edge of the light... not good. So I threw it back into the over, pressed it together as good as I could, let it cool a bit, and then tightened the screws. The damage had already been done though and now there's a 2-3 mm gap. Better then before, but noticable (by me anyway)

Just cleared my '06 last night. Looks good. The car is silver and I like that monochormatic look! Now I gotta get the silvervision bulbs. I'll try to post pics if any one's interested in seeing it on a silver GT. Just don't know how to do it!

Thanks for the directions....
