scoobydoo73
So when i was putting the oil pump back on it seems that the keyway or something tore into the edge of the seal. I'm guessing this means i'm putting on another one but i figured i would ask if that little seal at the edge really kept any oil in or not. picture attached
DarkChief22
When you installed the seal was the key way still on the crankshaft?
snederhiser
Hello; Yes you did and replace the seal. Next time remove the key or put a layer of tape over the offender to protect it. Steven.
scoobydoo73
yea the key was still on, it's pretty tightly wedged on there. I will try the tape idea if i can't get the key off easily. Thanks guys.
pleaidestar
It would be best if you can take it out, also get a couple of drops of oil and moisten the contacting edge of the seal with it, make sure there is no dirt on the crank and it doesn't have any gouges. Clean the setting area of the oil pump, the seal should sit just under the bevel on the pump.
robinlsb
Tap out the key with a drift. Oil it before you reinstall it. "Belief does not make truth. Evidence makes truth. And belief does not make evidence."
jp233
Yep, what Robin said. Tap out the key and replace that seal. The seal is cheap and you don't want to have to get back in there to fix a leak.
