Turbocharger longevity

Recommended Posts

Search the forum about the banjo bolt filter.. from what I've read, oil starvation is a leading killer, and the banjo bolt is the leading culprit.

There are plenty of guys on here with a lot of miles on their turbo- these are the guys who removed the banjo filter.

Almost 211k on the original oil feed lines, motor & VF-40 turbo. 15k OCI, custom stage2 tune, peaking at 18.5psi. See above 6k shift everyday I drive it. Banjo filter bolt; New ones put in at 73k. Remove the filter in the banjo bolts at 174K. Running Amsoil SSO oil & Ea oil filters. My filter bolts was clean after 100K. So I removed both filters in the banjo bolts & let the Duel by-pass, 2 micron filtration system take care of the small stuff.

Oil history from day1:

New. SOA filter & oil 4000 miles

1st. oil & filter change till 30k, Mobil1, 5w-30 every 6000 miles \ Fram oil

filter every 3000 miles.

Amsoil 0w-30 SSO and Amsoil Ea oil filter, Ea15k13 oil filter at 30k-73k .

At 73K, my filtration I use.http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/get-your-oil-filtration-down-2-microns-81741.html My oil system now is 7qt. I add 2-4qts over the 15k OCI.

Oil consummation hasn't change sense car was new.

Most off the shelf oil filter, filter down between 20 & 40 microns. Amsoil full-flow oil filter is 15 microns & Amsoil By-Pass oil filter is 2 microns.

This filtration system add 2qts. of oil to you motor. Which help keep the oil cooler.

In short, check you oil level often & top as needed. Use oil & filter that will protect for the OCI your running. OA's is the only way you know that your oil & filter is up for the challenge. After that IMO no OA's are needed.

Nice. I've been relatively lucky as well. Up to 90K miles now, banjo bolt filter was checked at 86K and clean. Maybe after 100K I'll remove it?

Turbo has very minimal shaft play at 86K miles, but I want to keep an eye on it at future intervals just to make sure everything is OK. ("zipper" sounds still make me twinge a little even though I have not personally experienced a turbo failure.) The worst thing that happened to me at Stage 2 was splitting of the endtanks on the intercooler.

My OCI with non-synthetic oil has been 3500mi and the car will consume about a quart of oil between changes.
