Wagon with no roof rack?

Recommended Posts

Yes! I did. :)

You will have to do a bit of body work and then will have to spot paint the roof at the very least.

First step remove the stupid ugly rub bars. This will expose nine lame holes that will be sure to rust at some point. Remove the roof rack bars as well since they rust to hell as well.

Take some fine grit sandpaper and sand down to the bare metal where the roof rub bars screwed in. How much paint you have to remove will depend on the extent of your rust if you have any. You can use bondo, or just use some glazing compound which will run you about $25 or so for a big tube including hardener. Mix up some of the bondo or glazing compound and do a few fill/sands (no pics of this since I forgot my camera when I did this step). Then spot prime with any cheap ass stop rust primer.

Since you won't be looking at your roof with a magnifying glass all the time you can take your color code down to your local auto body supply shop and they can mix up you a can of spray paint to match your color. If you want, then you can get a can of clear coat to spray over that.

If your rust is really pitted where the roof rack fits into the pinch bolts wire wheel the rust away and get some POR-15 or system sampler to try and stop the rust, or if you want to go the cheapest route get some rustoleum primer that turns rust into a primeable surface.

Since I still want my roof rack I didn't bother filling in the holes where the pinch bolts go. And obviously I am not finished painting, but that is how you do it.

i got mine without a rack and liked it, then realized pretty much all the other ones have a rack. i still havent decided if i want one or not.

monkey, i like your shark! where did you get that wing-thing on the back of it? ive seen a few wagons with those, i kind of like that look. is it a bolt-on? sorry if its a dumb question, i dont know much about subarus so far, im just learning.

The wing is from a '96 Legacy GT. My rear hatch was bashed in beyond repair. I found a GT at the junkyard and took the complete rear hatch off of it. The wing was part of it. It does bolt on to the hatch. If you wanted to bolt a wing on a regular hatch you would have to drill some holes, and good luck finding just the wing. You can find them on some Outbacks as well. It's also called a spoiler. :)

Has anyone ever fully removed the roof-rack/rub bars on a 2nd generation legacy?

All i have on my roof from the factory is the antenna which is weird,i thought they came on the drivers side rear quater pannel.

i was waiting for someone to do their roof like that. looks good
It makes the bare roof look so much better plus accents the black hood. (My 2002 S 60 too):)

my 95' postal came without a rack. One thing that really bugs me is that when i close my doors, you can hear the roof vibrate (metal ripple sound). does anybody elses do this? Was thinking it might be from having no rack.

My wagon doesn't rattle when i close the doors but when i go through the car wash and when it hit's the blowers at the end then it sounds like a beer can and it makes me think the roof is going to cave in,lol

mine did this as well, i pulled the headliner down and sprayed some expanding foam in the cross ribs and in the sides there are some small games filled them all and all rattle/tin can sound has disappeared!
