Based off this statement, do a lot of people run 5W50? I see a lot of posts where people run 0W40...

5W30 is pretty thin when hot.

Too find out what's best for our (EU) turbocharged Subaru engines, here in Holland we had an engineer of Kendall Oil taken oil samples from 150+ car's.

(This fellow also works on the best oil for top-fuel dragsters)

The samples where taken to the Kendall labaratories for analysis, and checked on everything you can imagine. So traces of metals from all engineparts, but also dilution with gas, sand, etc.

According to the engineer turbocharged performance engines like our's should not use rather thin oil, cause the engine's produce pretty high torque at relatively low rpm's. An other item is, they can also run relatively high top rpm's.

These fact's plus outcome of the oilreport, the conclusion was:

All 0W.. and ..W30 samples contained more metal parts than average.

The range 5W40, 10W40, and 5W50 came out best, with 5W50 as the absolute winner.

According to this engineer, most car manufacturers prescribe thinner oils, cause of the cold start. In practice most people do not take the time for the engine oil to reach working temperature. Premature wear out could be an item then.

5W50 provides a healthy cold start, and a good lubrification on high temperatures.

And this little gem was underneath... http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1293170&page=all

The mod bug bites again...i had my car stock for 3 1/2 years and collected parts from msprank group buys, etc...and so glad that i started to mod...it sure is a fun car! Had to install my parts this spring cuz next year is the big wedding...but i am saving for a turbo upgrade and supporting mods...

Enjoy the car and let the modding begin!

Ive been running shell rotella T6 for the last year and its good stuff...if it werent for these forums..i wouldve just used conventional 5w 30

Are you installing parts yourself? I hosted install days in my garage =)

I've been building my Xterra for the last 3 years and it just became too much for a daily driver. So that's why I picked up the subie. I plan on installing all the parts myself as I do all the work on my vehicles and in the chance I can't do it, odds are one of my local buddies can. I also host local mod days, trail runs, shooting/camping weekends, etc. I like to get together with other mod enthusiasts!

Here's my trail rig, I'm actually installing an ARB locker as we speak!!

  • 2 weeks later...

Wanting to change out my fluids in both diffs and the 5MT but seem to be getting mixed signals. I would like to swap all the fluids (including the oil w/ T6) and change the spark plugs before I go for my tune...

What do some of you local guys prefer?

put OEM plugs in when you swap those. Otherwise looks good, and swap the cusco front strut tower bar from "performance" to "ballast adding". Because of the front strut tower setup in these cars that does literally nothing for your performance except add weight to the front end. The front tower strut mounts are welded to the firewall and are braced by that already.

I didn't notice a difference. done it twice now with the redline, Once when I first got the car (99,000 miles) because I didn't know when it was last done and once a couple months ago (132,000 miles). I went with it because that's what was in the pictoral method to changing the fluids that you posted in the other day. I might try the cocktail next time just for chits and giggles.

Sooooo ended up by going with BAC5.2's cocktail; returned the valvoline and ordered up 3 qts of Red Line Lightweight Shockproof and 2 qts of Motul 300 Gear 75W90. Figured I would order another and do the rear diff at the same time! $90 with free Prime 2-day shipping from amazon, not too bad!

I will post an update with my results:)

So ordered up the Red-Line Lightweight Shookproof, few qts of motul 300 gear (for MT cocktail and rear diff) through Amazon. Got a couple puralator one filters, 4 replacement spark plugs, and a smoked plate cover for the rear from advanced auto with a $50 off $125 promo code picked up in store (ignore the royal purple, that's for my xterra). Just have to swing by walmart after work and pick up a couple gallons of Rotella T6! I'll be a happy camper!!

I can't wait! But still putting together some of the final pieces of the puzzle. Fluids and all the pre-tune/scheduled maintenance will be done by the end of this week. But I still need my grimmspeed headers gasket to arrive and my "fixed" EL headers! Oh and the custom y-pipe to be welded up. Then it will be time to get road tuned!

Drained and filled the 5MT with the Shockproof and Motul 300 cocktail; noticeably smoother in every gear and feels like new. Took the crunch out of 4th all together. Thanks for the help everyone!

How some of my oil arrived:/
