noise in steering

Recommended Posts

I'm getting a clunk noise in steereing when parked & motor off. It sounds like something loose in steering rack. Is this normal, or should I have it checked by an alignment shop. My Subaru dealer can't verify, and am hoping that if an alignment shop gives an estimate to repair, I could submit bill to Subaru.

You shouldn't be moving the steering wheel when the car is not moving and there is no power steering as in when the motor is off.

You should only be concerned if it does this while the engine is on and moving.

You're supposed to move it when the motor is off to lock it. It locks in one 1/2 turn in either direction. Yes, I do hear & feel it when driving over dips in the road.

Many of us have this noise. Some have tightened the H brace bolts under the front of the car and this has fixed it. Others (like me) haven't been so lucky and have learned to live with the noise.

whoa.. apologist...

Ok....

Didn't think about the locking, but generally moving the steering wheel while the car is not moving is not recommended since it puts a lot of strain on the steering system.

So it does occur while driving, then I guess you can check out that H-brace issue or try to reproduce it to the dealer and hope they don't resolve it with "could not reproduce".

What I plan on doing is taking it to my steering & suspension specialist, have a written report of the issue, & bring it to the dealers attention. This is noticeable with the motor off and shouldn't be happening. Living with it is wrong, as down the road it could be a potential accident at high speed if something breaks loose. Besides their are several other issues, and with 3 or more wriiten invoices from the dealer wheather they resolve it or not allows me to file a claim under Pennsylvania's lemon law.

What's more important is that it happens while driving and as you stated it could be a safety hazard.

Not to hijack, but what are the other issues?

Other issues include the dash rattle which is very loud at times. The hesitation between 2nd under throttle--which some refer to as studdering. Though I am planning on replacing the up-pipe here, but it realy should be at Subaru's expense. Lastly the brake rotors being out of round, which the dealer resurfaced, but came back after 1000 miles.

I don't have a case of teh rattles, but it is very annoying when it happens.

Studdering....sucks

Sucky pad material....sucks

I live with that crap and try to enjoy the car. Bahhh, no more nice guy, I'm going to give my dealer a laundry list of all this and other issues and make sure I reproduce each one and whine about it till SoA finds a fix.
