VIN -> DOHC or SOHC

Recommended Posts

I know all the LGT's are DOHC, but what about the others in the Subaru line?

I'm looking for an engine to swap into my LGT, given a VIN is possible to determine whether the car has DOHC or SOHC without actually viewing the car.... obviously a look under the hood would be the quick way.

I did find this VIN decoder:

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Vehicle_Identification_Numbers_%28VIN_codes%29/Subaru/VIN_Codes

So for example '4S4BP61CX57309677' which is in an insurance write-off auction (http://www.sgi.sk.ca/salvage_bid/all_search.html) doesn't say, and the best picture isn't clear.

Well someone got a deal, it went for $1,151.54.... no Subaru's in this weeks auction :-(

Since I'm obviously in the market for a replacement engine, I've been looking around for a better VIN decoder - any one have one. It seems that there's 'encoded' information and 'infered' information, with the SOHC/DOHC information not being encoded....

Also been reading up on Franken Engines, lots of possibilities for someone willing to 'play'.
