My first real track experience at Willow Springs International Raceway

Recommended Posts

On Jan 20th, 2013, I went to the local race track at Willow Springs International Raceway.

Xtreme Speed organized the event, and I got a couple of my friends from school going. With the coupon code, it's only $95 for the whole day. Very affordable.

The event is held at Streets of Willow course with the Counter Clockwise configuration. From all that I've read before going, CW configuration was much more popular than the CCW.

The Streets of Willow Springs is a 1.6-mile road course with skid pad.

This is Southern California! Shouldn't be this cold!!!! :spin:

Beginning of the day, I went out with a couple of friends behind me in the EK and Gencoupe. It was a lot of fun!

During registration I decided to/peer pressured into signing up for the Time Attack Competition. For just $20 more, you'll get two extra sessions. I signed up for the cool numbered stickers, but I'm really glad that I did sign up for it! The two extra Time Attack sessions was really open, not too many cars. Therefore you'll get to really get on it without being held back by traffic.

First session was parade lap. Second session of the day, I was placed into the n00b group (Blue). Too many cars, too many traffic, and I ended up with a 1:44.777

I was disappointed, because the time was not fast enough to bump me into the next/higher group (Green). Luckily the following session was the Extreme Time Attack session, where I had the open track and got a 1:35.828.

As the day progressed, I managed to get a 1:33.135 in the 4th session of the day running in the intermediate group (Green). I suppose the NSX that passed me gave me a good target to chase with.

I ended up sitting out 2 sessions of the day, one because my friend with the Gencoupe spun out, almost flipped, and cracked his radiator. The last session of the day was getting cold already, and I didn't want to risk not being able to drive my car home.

The day has came to an end at around 5pm. I was worried about my friend's Gencoupe, running around back and forth trying to find help as the award ceremony went underway. Little did I know, my lap time of 1:35 netted me a 3rd place in the AWD Street class in the Extreme Time Attack, and my lap time of 1:33 netted me another 3rd place trophy in the Extreme Speed AWD Competition - Street. That's when I realized, that $20 earlier from the day totally paid itself off! I'm really happy with the outcome as this is my first time really tracking! I'll definitely be back for more!

And this is exactly why novices don't belong out on the track without instructors!!! :spin::spin::spin::spin:

it's not our first time at the track, my first time with my car.

Just his all season tires, along with RWD, mid corner, weight shift, and a patch of dirt...was a bad combination

why the tape on the headlights?

DRL delete FTW

I have my fogs as my DRL, but I pull'd the fuse...

Tape to cover my precious retrofits...LOL

Glad you had fun:lol:

I did!

Nice pics, and nice job placing 3rd on your first track day! that's very impressive. Hopefully I can make it down to join you guys some day. I wish I still had my spec.b to be more competetive, but my wagon will have to do.

sure it's a great track!

Looks like fun. Those rear shots of your car look sweet.

thanks

Everyone should experience the track. Did the track bug bite you?

I've always wanted to go, just didn't plan on going that soon. Else I wouldn't have put the Hankook Ventus V12 on my Emotions...

Nice video man! Way to keep up with that NSX. I've just had bikes on a track, (my car has just seen autocross) but it looks like awesome fun. One tip always mentioned when driving was to grip the wheel or shuffle your hands. Don't try to blend them. When I do one or the other I feel like I have much better control. But, doing autocross shuffling is the better option.

Yes. Hand movement. There's lots of variations, i like to use the 3 oclock/9 oclock position and do my best to never move my hands (shuffle steer) around the steering wheel. It's odd at first but its much easier to steer and not get lost on the steering wheel.

When I steer and make tight turns my arms look like this.

Here's the rest of the link on steering wheel control. This is what i read years ago and have been applying it ever since.
