Gotcha. Will do. Thanks. Tried both through the wizard and the control panel/system/device manager. I unzipped the drivers in the ecu flash folder and tried it that way and without them being unzipped. deleted redownloaded through remove programs a couple of times. Thanks again.

Hmmm well I can't say for sure. It might be fine, but it's not guaranteed to work with EcuFlash unless you got it from Infamous... any possibility of just sending it back and getting it from them instead?

Ok guys, any help would be appreciated....

On the original procedure list I am fine through Step 7...

No dice on Step 8 (8. "The Found Device Wizard" should show up again, this time trying to install the USB Port.)

I understand the Vag-Com driver installed fine but the USB driver must be installed.

Going to the second procedure list from Adoniram, Step 5 (5. On the right, expand "Ports (COM & LPT)"), my list is different. I am on Windows Vista Home.

See attached pic.

Does this look familiar to anyone? In the USB controllers section there are the USB Host Controllers, and then the USB Root Hub. I can find the Open Port Subaru 1.3 in both controller and root hub.

Where does the USB driver get installed?

Thanks again for any help!

The following instructions are for Windows 7 x64 machines:

(but should work with 32-bit machines)

NOTE: I've tested these instructions on 2 different laptops, both running Windows 7 x64 (one is Enterprise, one is Home Premium) so this should be applicable to most (if not all) Win 7 x64 machines.

1. Download EcuFlash 1.29 by clicking here

2. Run the installation and accept all defaults (including installation directory)

3. If you see the following error message, relax, just click OK, and forget all about it.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y175/academyracer/LGT%20flashing/1.jpg

4. Finishing going through the installation, accepting all defaults.

5. Plug in the Vag-Com cable

6. A "found new hardware" bubble should pop up. You do not need to click on it or do anything, but if you did, it would look like the pictures below. DO NOT INTERRUPT THE AUTOMATIC DRIVER INSTALLATION.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y175/academyracer/LGT%20flashing/2.jpg

After a moment, it would then look like this:

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y175/academyracer/LGT%20flashing/3.jpg

7. After the drivers have been installed, open EcuFlash. You should see something like the following window. Look at the bottom-right corner of EcuFlash; you should see something like FT232R USB UART A400fMIA. If you see this, the drivers have been installed correctly.

If you see something like "No Vehicle Interface," click here to manually change the drivers

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y175/academyracer/LGT%20flashing/4.jpg

8. Close EcuFlash, and download the latest RomRaider by clicking here

9. Run the installation and accept all defaults.

10. At the end of installation, you might see something like the following window. Just click "This program installed correctly."

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y175/academyracer/LGT%20flashing/5.jpg

11. Download the latest logger definitions (logger.xml) and place it into the RomRaider folder, which should be: C:\Program Files (x86)\RomRaider

The logger definitions file can be found here

**Keep in mind the file you download is a .zip and the file you want needs to be extracted out of the zip.

12. Download the latest ECU definitions (ecu_defs.xml) and place it into the RomRaider folder (same as before).

The ecu definitions file can be found here

**Keep in mind the file you download is a .zip and the file you want needs to be extracted out of the zip.

13. Download the latest Road Dyno Car definitions (cars_def.xml AND cars_def.dtd) and place them into the RomRaider folder.

**IMPORTANT: There is already a file in that folder called cars_def.dtd. I suggest you rename it cars_def.old before proceeding.

Both of these files can be found here

14. If the following window appears, click No

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y175/academyracer/LGT%20flashing/6-1.jpg

15. If the following window appears, click OK

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y175/academyracer/LGT%20flashing/7.jpg

16. In RomRaider, click Settings (at the top), then Logger Definition Location...

Navigate to the RomRaider folder, which is where you placed the logger.xml file. Select the logger.xml file.

17. RomRaider should now show you all the options in the left pane, like below:

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y175/academyracer/LGT%20flashing/8.jpg

18. Close RomRaider.

19. Download the latest version of LearningView by clicking here

20. Install Learning View

21. Refer to the first post here, step 21, to begin the actual tuning process which should be the same as before.

:)

Changing the Vag-Com cable drivers (Win 7)

(only do this EcuFlash or RomRaider does not recognize your cable AND you've made sure the correct port is selected in those programs)

1. Open the start menu, and right click on Computer. Select Manage

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y175/academyracer/LGT%20flashing/d1.jpg

2. In the left pane, click "Device Manager" and expand "Ports (COM & LPT)"

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y175/academyracer/LGT%20flashing/d2.jpg

3. Right-click on the cable, which is called something like "USB Serial Port (COM6)" and click "Update driver"

** If you are unsure which is the cable, simply unplug the cable and watch which one goes away. Plug the cable back in, and that's the one you want.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y175/academyracer/LGT%20flashing/d3.jpg

4. At the following window, click "Browse my computer for driver software"

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y175/academyracer/LGT%20flashing/d4.jpg

5. At the following window, click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y175/academyracer/LGT%20flashing/d5.jpg

6. At the following window, click "Have Disk"

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y175/academyracer/LGT%20flashing/d6.jpg

7. At the following window, click "Browse"

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y175/academyracer/LGT%20flashing/d7.jpg

8. Navigate to the EcuFlash drivers folder (in my case, C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenECU\EcuFlash\drivers) and select FTDIBUS (or FTDIBUS.inf)

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y175/academyracer/LGT%20flashing/d8.jpg

9. Follow the prompts to complete installing the driver. You may want to restart the computer.

10. Open EcuFlash or RomRaider and verify that the cable works.

This is excellent. I've been considering booting up my old XP machine if I ever get to the point of connecting the cable I've had now for in the ballpark of a year. Now I'll be able to use my good laptop, which has a much better battery too. I'm pretty good with computers but step-by-step like this is really helpful in making it bulletproof.

bottom right for me says USB <-> SERIAL.

I continued with the installation instructions, everything else matched, but ECUFlash doesnt connect to my car when i tested everything.

This is what someone PMed me a month back when we were troubleshooting getting the cable to work:

iNVAR

Here is the cable I bought FYI

http://www.ebay.com/itm/160667890896...84.m1439.l2648

This cable is made by Ross tech rosstech.com is their WS

You know the URL to my thread under "tuning"

You know the software issues I was having, could only see LV, ecu v1.29 did not see the ecu, neither did RR

after a week of Trouble software/drivers, cable etc and following a bunch of suggestions, I have found a way to make the $12 cable work.

1. Unstall ECUflash V1.29

2. Install ECUflash V1.42(romraider site) let the software install, you will have to "OK, YES or Continue" a bunch of times because it's not Microsoft signed, make sure the USB end is plugged in to the computer, hardware wizzard will find it as a "OPENPORT" device and continue to install the proper driver for the cable, again you will have to click some "OK's/continue" when it's doing the installing. I then went to RR page and made sure I had all the latest and greatest def's extracted and installed, I think in Metafile dir. I then shut the computer off(or restart), plugged OBD2 side into car, usb still in computer, started car(green connectors not connected, I was checking RR) started computer.

Works 100%, able to see real time in RR, (as boxes are selected), press F1 to log(I was just idleing in driveway) F1 again to stop, found the file so that works good.

ECUflash test, green connector connected, copied original .hex

And finally LV works great.

I hope this helps you trouble shoot for other folks, feel free to have them PM me or post this @ the RR Site(feel free to edit/use parts as needed. Feels like my Birthday today!!

This is what someone PMed me a month back when we were troubleshooting getting the cable to work:

i tried this method on my win7-64bit laptop (using the latest ecuflash), and it finally connected to my ECU, but when i went to read the current ROM with ecuflash, the car would stall and wouldn't restart until i unplugged the vagcom cable. Nearly crapped my pants thinking i bricked it.
