Curtis's 05 LGT Build Journal

Recommended Posts

Hello all, its been a while and the time has finally come.

For those who care, a little background information. I picked up my 05 OBP LGT in January of 2012 which makes this Subaru number five and by far my favorite one. Iv lately stayed away from the mod bug which got me in a little trouble following my last build which was my 01 RSTI. A full JDM Version 8 swapped 2.5RS coupe as seen here.

But alas it was time to get a big boy more grownup car and just leave it the hell alone. Of course we all know how long that lasts. Only took a month of ownership before the mod bug set in and we started tweaking some things. Day 1, purchased on ebay of all places from the original owner and never looked back.

So I have enjoyed this car quite a bit over the last two years but now at the time of starting this build we are approaching 143k glorious miles and its time to move on to the next step. Over the last year the car has developed some of the worst pistion slap I have ever heard. So bad, if it were a customer car, I probably wouldn't feel comfortable letting it go back to them. But since she has no ill effects from it, I just keep driving it.

I am an Audi/Volkswagen tech by trade at an indie shop here in CT and so Im blessed to have many great resources and help on this build. So Id like to thank the following peeps ahead of time getting me here.

Looking good. What are your goals?

Honestly nothing crazy. Dont wanna give it all away yet but I really want to keep this a tasteful daily driver. With my setup I hope to break around 320 AWHP and call it a day.

always a fan of shiny parts! keep up the great work and photo bombs :) hopefully she's getting a proper turbo to match that new motor. did u rebuild the bottom end or just keep it stock?

Stock bottem end which is more than enough for my goals. 09 STi block new from the dealer with the heat treated crank. Ill being going with a BNR 18g and of course supporting mods. Cleaned up heads, slap it together and just drive it :)

Nice radio, good luck on your built

Thanks much!

I'm in CT as well currently contemplating a rebuild rolling 118k mi with a BNR 18g with supporting fuel mods and numerous bolt on's, put down a conservative 280 WHP 276 TQ at "The Shop" in Norwalk. Subscribed for more.

i would hope with an 18g u could easily be in the 300+whp safely.

Good numbers! I see with the mileage why you would want to go conservative but you have the nice fuel upgrades, you have so much more potential to go higher! Even on my brand new stock internals 320ish is still conservative but safe and reliable which is really all I want. WHo did the tune if you don't mind me asking, Im scowering around to find a good one whos willing to work with my anal self.

Oh and TGVs ported and tires being mounted by Mark and German Autoworks tomorrow. Should have some shots of my Volks on the car tomorrow!

Yeah Mike did the tune I think his Instagram handle is MikeySTI he can pretty much do whatever you want, he actually even told me he could get more out of it but I told him I drive a lot for school and work. Guy know's his stuff has owned numerous STI's currently drives an ALPHA OMEGA GTR *Mint*. I put a ridiculous amount of miles on my car so I want it to last as long as possible yet I bought a LGT weird right?... Plus I'm still running stock TMIC with new OEM clutch.

Call up the shop ask to speak with Jimmy he's a great guy or check out their website they hardly advertise but are always busy their work speaks volumes to their customers, their shop car is a 1406 whp GTR... among other cars.

Oh I know STI Mikey is first on my list since he is so great to work with and really knows his stuff. Not trying to be thatttt guy but one of my best friends has a GTR and Mikey of course tuned it. The shop is good people. My boss and Jimmy have tossed each other some work in the past.

i understand having a conservative tune but and say u have 350whp as a DD doesnt mean u have to romp this shit outta it every time u drive. i just think its nice to have both options. but sounds like the guy knows his stuff :)

Baby got some special treatment today.

Got my boss to do a full detail, sucker. Wash, claybar, wetsand spots, polish, glaze and wax.

Then on to the fun part.

Brembos polkin and rusty ass coils...

What a difference with the AVO LCA bushings... getting a good alignment first thing tomorrow morning but I can already tell. Night and day difference in steering response and stiffness. Car feels more nimble and pointed straight.

Welp over the weekend in one day I swapped my 6 speed tranny I had just sitting around for about 2 years...

It was in my RS and I just now got around to getting it in thanks to some great advice from the master swap thread. Everything went pretty smooth however I now have a pretty good tranny leak going from the axle seals.

Friday when everything comes in, I will be swapping over the sundials to newer style ones with all new seals to see if that helps. For now though everything feels great!

I do have to say I forgot how short the JDM gears are. Im like in 5th by the time Im at 35 mph haha

I also have to highly recommend Southbend Clutches for your next clutch if you want something different than your usual ACT or Exedy. I went with the stage 2 daily kit and it feels EXACTLY the same as stock just a little bit stiffer which I like and it holds crazy power. Its basically an Exedy kit but they mod it and make it way better.

Tranny leak issue has been solved. Thanks to some help from here. If you have done a JDM 6 speed swap or an early STi six speed swap and notice after changing over to the newer style gaskets that you still have a leak, bite the bullet and get the newer style sundials for your tranny with all new seals and o rings. This solved my leak issue completely. Parts all together cost me around $100 with my dealer discount and well worth it.

Been back and forth between what cat back to get and figured just for the hell of it, lets see what my dealer discount can do for me on an SPT cat back. Lets just say with only one left in the country, I went ahead and ordered it :p
