ErichCS
Has anyone just inactivated theirs by some means? I am really not concerned about my car being stolen and i hate forking over money to the dealer for programming my key. Of course the issue of misplacing your keys somewhere when away from home also concerns me. Thanks!
DiscoWagon
Why would you want to? As far as I know, the immobilizer works with the ECU so you would have to maybe reprogram your ECU to not utilize this feature. Another way is to tape the chip inside your key somewhere within your steering column, this is what a lot of people with STI swaps do.
ErichCS
The main reason i don't like it is I dislike the idea of giving money to the dealer to activate a key. Also what happens if you misplace your key on a road trip? A dealer cannot make you another one without you then paying for a tow to the dealer with your car. The up side is preventing auto theft right? Where i park there is generally one car per year stolen from the 2-3K cars that are parked their everyday. Scotty
Dig the chip out of the key and stick it next to the key slot.
ErichCS
I was under the impression when the dealer programmed the immobilizer they needed all the keys present and the car.
ErichCS
The story begins when i purchased my car a month or so ago...and when i went to pick it up the dealer only handed me one set of keys. Having no knowledge of the immobilizer and the cost to replace a key i let it slide.
Penphoe
I took my car in to the shop last week and gave them the valet key. My car wouldn't stay started with it. I wonder if the valet key can only be used to run the car if its in valet mode? LaterZ! Darren!!
Penphoe
Hmmm. Interesting. The valet key fits and the car cranks over. It doesn't stay running though. LaterZ! Darren!!
mwiener2
maybe jiffy lube ("the shop") didn't put any oil back in the car and that's why it won't stay started My Mods List (Updated 8/22/17) 2005 Outback FMT Running on Electrons
