Shift linkage

Has anyone ever shifted into 3rd and had their whole shift lever come up into the cab?

I ask because its happened to me like 5 times now. The snap ring that holds the cup in place keeps breaking off....and every time I order a new one from Subaru (only like $1.25 my commercial account cost).

What gives? I know I'm putting these snap rings on right.....Why do they keep breaking off.....

Has nothing to do with power. My Outback is doing it ever since I put my short shifter in....and that car has almost no power lol. Its stock (well engine / trans is stock)

First two images are from the bottom. The snap ring clips on the very bottom where the white cup protrudes out of the metal casing

The last image is the same part from the top view.

Without the snap ring, you can jut pull the entire shifter up into the cab. The snap ring prevents the cup from coming out of the metal part surrounding it under the car. My snap rings keep breaking off

I've ordered all new parts from Subaru. I'll be putting them all on today. It only costed me $15 from the dealer! lol

Commercial accounts are awesome

In response to the original post.

You gotta buy a new bush, as well as circlip. There is also a round edge on the circlip, and a sharp edge... round edge should be facing up towards the cabin, sharp edge down towards the road.

Because yes, this happened to me, and yes, it popped off about 2 or 3 times within the following weeks. I eventually replace the bush, and did the circlip properly, has been fine since.

Subaru called the white cup a bushing...I replaced that, the two o rings on it, and the snap ring.

I didn't know the snap ring had two different edges on it. I'll check it to see how I have it installed tomorrow. Thanks for sharing! That makes perfect sense. Its always something retarded simple that I get hung up on lol
