OEM NAV install on 2008 Outback ... ugh

Got a bug up my ass today and installed it all this evening. Once I got going, I just kept going and about 4 hrs later, I was driving around the neighborhood! Turns out the player had the '06 nav DVD in there, so happy ... but I'd want to get the latest version eventually.

No pics of the install process; sorry, but I'll take a couple pics of the areas i think were important when I get back to it to install the reverse camera (I've coiled up the signal wire and tucked it up for now).

Notes from install that could hopefully help someone in the future...

Tagged most of the wires on each end with a label maker so I didn't have to keep going back to my diagram unless I really had to; this really helped things go smoothly as I could easily look at any wire end and know exactly what it was and where it went without having to re-trace it back to the connector.

Right now, its all hardwired to each respective point that needed to be tapped into; exception is I used a 4-place connector from Radioshack in the wire run to the cluster ... just in case i had to pull the harness off if it didnt work the first time around. It also made twisting the two data wires together easier.

All the terminations were done by carefully stripping about a half inch of the wire, and then twisting on, and soldering the new wires. Only issue with this method was I couldn't use shrink tube; good quality electrical tape did the trick! First time was a charm and everything worked flawlessly thanks to the diagram I had made before I started by combining all the information I had collected from Akuma and SVX ... you guys rock!

Getting the cluster out was a ROYAL P.I.T.A!!! I've done my share of p.i.t.a. installs so it didn't phaze me there lol ... a long extension with a screwdriver bit and a ton of cussing worked on the two lower screws.

The 20-pin navi connector to i88 wires were easy with .040 female connectors on each end snapping into place in the empty locations as needed.

Mounted the GPS antenna in the stock location behind the cluster by bolting on a metal braket I had lying around and sticking on the magnetic antenna.

Four bolts and flipped the driver seat back and had ample room to work. Mounted the DVD player using one stock mount on the inside and about a 5 inch length of 1" wide flat steel stock on the other side to make a bracket I didn't get with the kit (clearance hole on one end, and a threaded hole on the other and a slight step up bend); pics really would help here lol.

Main changes/cleaning up I'd do as I get time would be to put a 6-place Radioshack connector on the wires going to the radio harness and a single connector that goes to the ignition signal on the clock connector. Then, the harness would be truly removable and easy to integrate into another car in the future ... just not with stock connectors, but Radioshack is never far away!

When I get the time, I'll put my wiring diagram on AutoCAD so it'll help future nut-jobs like us!

Also tested out the Video input today with my son's portable DVD player and watched Barney on the driveway with the radio set on aux, lol

Just installed a cheap ebay reverse camera and ran the wiring to the screen. Got the camera that had the video cable that also had the extra signal wire built in so that the reverse signal could also be run at the same time. It Works!

How much would you charge to do the same on my car

Never really thought about anything like that. I can definitely help by giving you all the information you need. Most of my help came from AkumaMax and SVX so they'd be the guys to hit up for a true plug and play setup cos mine really isnt unless you wanna do a bit of wire stripping and soldering or use wire taps.

Hopefully, my wiring diagram will help someone in the future. Still working on putting it on autocad

On the 16 pin navi screen connector (i90), where do pin 4 & 5 go?

well on a '08 it's called i119 (16-pin) and i120 (20-pin).

pin 4 (br Y) goes to backup light system (basically an input so the system knows you're in reverse, not really needed unless you have a camera)

pin 5 (GY) goes to ignition ... I think i took the signal from the clock connector i59 pin-8

If you like, I can send you a better scan of my drawing .. pm me your email address

Grave dig but does the factory nav have a mute output wire that goes ground when voice prompts are given?

See my post #15, above. The monitor screen has a pin that gets (I think) +5V when the nav system wants to talk or chime.

On the under-seat nav unit, the 10-pin power connector has a pin labeled "LMUTE" on Kenwood's schematics that might provide a mute signal. Subaru's wiring diagrams do not show a factory wire on that slot on the car's harness plug.

Does someone have a picture of the connectors ?

I have the trip computer in my car which has: Grn/blk, blk/yello, purp, and blu/red wires.

Can I splice those for the clock, information sensor, and outside temp ?

This is all from the screen side. There is also: brn/yello, grn/yello, blk/red, blk/wht, blk/wht, and twisted together pink/purple, as wellas a gray.

All I care about is the navigation, information center, clock, and outside temp.

On a side note, too bad the 05 to 09 don't have the weather-band like the earlier models did.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you for this thread. I got the parts and wired everything up. It was slightly different since my 2007 clock doesn’t have all the wires.

I used the stereo harness and the green one behind the gauge cluster. I have some extra plugs and stuff.

Question: I dont have any beeps or navi sound.

Its a 2007 OBXT. Any advice?
