Nav Question - Audio Switches

Recommended Posts

I am looking to put a double DIN Nav system into my car, and have done a few searches to get some better ideas. Ideally I will be getting a receiver/DVD player to fit in my glove box, and an LCD touch screen to mount in my double DIN dash(still to be modified right now). I still don't know the exact system I am going get, but I have a very specific EE/Audio type question. If i put my DVD/NAV player in my glove box, what kind of switch(s) will i need to toggle between the car radio and the GPS outputs? I would like to implement a 2 switch system that will toggle between the GPS/Car stereo (one will switch front speakers one will switch back). Also how sensitive is the ground? Does the audio switch have enough connections to toggle both grounds as well, or will I need something else? I guess it would be possible to just double ground the speaker, but if the GPS/Car Stereo grounds float at different levels it could put some excessive noise on the line. So far this is my first project, and I am more interested in just using GPS for just GPS, and i'm sure speaker upgrades will be in the future.

You completely lost me on the speaker switching/grounding questions.

What car/radio/year do you currently have?

What hardware are you looking at installing?

and

What do you want it to do?

If you don't have the forsaken dual climate radio/ACC of a 2005/06 GT/XT, and actually have a place to put a double din LCD, why not get a Pioneer AVIC-D1 and be done with it? (Double din, touch screen, radio, CD, DVD & NAV)

I have a 2005 Legacy GT, and yes it is forsaken. I have moved my clock to my ashtray so now i have a double DIN opening. I want to get a package with an LCD screen (double Din size), and a gps receiver/dvd player...which i will put in the glove box...how do i connect the GPS receiver/dvd player to the speakers (for audio directions, right left, etc)...do they typically come with 4 audio outs? Do i have to amplify/split this signal? I want to hook it to both my front and rear speakers seperatly controlled by a switch. I can switch the GPS audio on/off when i want...does this clarify?

It all depends on what actual combo you get, but if you're using the AVIC-N2 or D1 for example, and the appropriate DVD accessory, you'd be set. Typically, you'd never need to split the audio signals, they should have all 4 plus a control signal line between the two. Also the N2 & D1 have built in amplifiers if you'd prefer to keep it simple. They also have line level outs if you want to get separate amplifiers & uprgraded speakers.

I don't personally have any experience with this hardware though, so perhaps someone else would like to chip in? Also, you can do a search on the forums for "AVIC-N2" & you should find a couple install examples.

Right...i have done a few searches, but i still have a question on the speaker setup with some type of disconnect. Basically i want to run my car stereo as my main audio source (CD, AM/FM), and be able to turn on my GPS when i desire (using a switch or something like that).

when i say turn on...i meant the sound (by the way). The GPS will always run, but i want to be able to turn the sound on and off to the front and back speakers as desired.

Shouldnt the front to rear fade do that? At least make it almost muted...

If I pass you on the right, I'm flipping you off.
