Second gen suspension swap to first gen?

Recommended Posts

I have been looking at some first gen leggys. Can you take your second gen stock OEM suspension (springs and struts) and bolt them on to a first gen? Do you need spacers or is it a direct swap?

I may look at a first gen ss w/EJ22T but the springs have been cut.

I am replacing the springs/struts on my second gen soon. The struts I have on now are kyb-gr2s w/60k, and still feel great. I have heard they can last up to 100k. Can I swap them over to a first gen?

Yes, the search is my friend. :p

i think your in the clear to use 2002 - 04 wrx springs and struts IF you switch the top hats with the first gen. i bought a 2002 wrx strut bar and the holes were off so i had to drill my own holes to fit. so as far as i know and have heard a few times. wrx struts and springs with first gen top hats... personally id just shop for 93 impreza coil overs but thats not to budget friendly

not sure about the ride height. i think the wrx might lower it a bit but most likly stay the same. but if you were to used outback then im pretty sure ur gonna be sitting higher then normal because outbacks have a higher ride height.... Im planning on just running some coilovers

Suspenion FAQ: http://legacygt.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3506722&postcount=5

broknindarkagain Suspension FAQ quote regarding raceland coilovers "These are "budget" coilovers. Quality is questionable and spring rates are unknown. Some people love these, and some people hate them. This would be a good option if all you car about is being lowered." brok says that you need to spend at least $1k to get a good set. For $500-600 you could get some H&R or Tein lowering springs and a brand new set of KYB-GR2s. Or find some used coilovers for a lot cheaper, but you'll have to look around.

Coilovers are cool, but I think that they would be too stiff for my wagon or sedan as my comfy dd. I don't want to be getting rattled all the time. But I have never experienced them first hand so my opinion is just based on other people's opinions.

what year first gen? 90-91 legacies rear top hats don't interchange with bug eye up

but they are the SAME as 93-01 impreza top hats

if it's face lift (92-94) they are the same as wrx 02 to 07

the prefacelift top hats will bolt to wrx struts, but after a couple days they will break the top hats and knock like a sunnovabish. i know

here is my car before

and with wrx stock struts and springs bolted on. swapped top hats from orig struts

Limited wheels and roof rack. also cheapie fogs

I listened to those damn struts knock for like a year. HANDLES LIKE A BOSS THOUGH!

can someone post a picture of what the top hat looks like? and whats the difference between the two? just distance between bolts?

Sorry man, just noticed you wanted a picture.

Here's what the top hat looks like. As for the

difference, not sure. Maybe the angle it sits

on the strut?

A guy named David Carter made some.

I think this is what you mean.

Wow, that hood is awesome. Lucky find. My SS is black too.

One can never have too many EJ22Ts. I have two, and wish I had an extra $1200 to buy a third that is available here in SLC. It's another black SS. :) If I could get it I could do a frame up restoration as a fun project. I have a pipe dream as of now; putting an EG33 into a Brat, lol. Maybe it will happen, you never know.
