When is brake noise not brake noise?

I'm not sure this topic goes here. I'll let the mods decide.

For the last few months my '05 Outback has been making a noise when coming to a stop. It was like the howl of a truck when they come to a stop at a red light. It was a deep, sounded like it came from the center of the car, and I could feel it in the e-brake handle. I asked my mechanic to look at all of the brakes (since it only happened when coming to a stop). He found nothing unusual. Today it happened. Coming to a stop, the howl turned in to a bang-bang-bang-... and I could feel it in my seat. Long story short, the bearing in the center\propeller driveshaft let go. My guess is that it was worn out and when coming to a stop it pressed the bearing and made it moan.
