so, a friend of mine picked up a White Evo 9 MR from a salvage yard. It had hit a curb, bent the control arm, axle cv joint, the wheel, and the fender. He got it all fixed up, it is a salvage title though. we moved it over to my garage to do all the maintenance on, and once it's all ready to go he plans on selling it.

I want it.

but i also love my spec B and don't want to get rid of it (stage 2 DGM 08 Spec B). My question to you all would be, is it worth it? the spec B is my daily driver. I also have a POS old ford truck for haulin trash and such, and I have a rather unique built race car, 350whp, 2100lbs. The evo would stay VERY close to stock and it would be a daily..

Things i like about the Evo...

-The nostalgia

-Looks gorgeous, I cant stop staring at it.

-feels great to drive, very direct. good sound.

-lower miles (72k)

Things I don't like about the Evo...

-Flashy, cop attention

-Higher cost of maintenence, hopefully no reliability issues keeping it stockish

-the rear seat does not fold down.

-less room in the rear seat.

Things I like about the spec B that i'd miss...

-Comfortable seats for roadtrips.

-heated seats.

-quiet interior ride.

-smooth ride.

-the sleeper effect.

-more interior space.

-ease of maintenance, everything just works.

Save your money for the other toy, 350whp 2100lbs.

How old it the truck, I have a 86' F150. I just put a class 3 hitch on it so I can tow my 18ft trailer if I ever need to.

305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD).  CHECK your oil, these cars use it.

I think daily driving an Evo would be a significant downgrade and get to be annyoing - the interior is plasticy and cheap, the ride is harsh. Coming from the fairly refined LGT interior and ride, I think you might regret it.

'94 F250, class 2 hitch to use to tow my 14ft trailer.. to tow my other tow, but I've only towed this evo with it actually. It's a pretty sketchy truck though, would only trust it in town.

The other toy isn't exactly street legal so I can't cruise around with it. I also like the fact that people just drool over evos. Myself included.

the spec b is better than the EVO for a daily in every way. the things the evo does have over the spec b(front diff, DCCD center diff, brembos) can be bought for the spec b with some targeted purchases, and then you would never even think of the evo.

I'll have to admit, as much as enjoy my wagon, my Spec B is a much better ride and can be just as powerful.

The Spec B is a better DD.

The Evo would be a better track car.

You already have a track car that is better than the Evo would be. ( I'm curious what it is!)

Keep the Spec B and the dedicated track car. IMHO cars like the Evo that are half DD and half track/race are a bad compromise trying to achieve two different goals, and only make sense for an enthusiast who can afford only one car. If you can possibly afford to have a dedicated track car and dedicated DD, that is the way to go and you already do.

Nothing like a race track to find the weak points in man and machine.

I'd keep the spec B. I was looking at an evo before I bought mine. One thing you forgot to take into account is the cost of insurance. The cost for an evo is quite a bit more. For me looking at an evo/sti insurance would have went up ~700 every 6 months versus ~100 per 6 months for my spec B.

that's true, insurance is a concern... but either car would be paid off, so it wouldn't be too expensive to keep around. The evo is in great shape too, no rust anywhere and low miles comparatively. Something about looking at it just makes the kid in me giggle. It looks MUCH more aggressive than the spec B, and it was the first car i really ever wanted when i first learned to drive (that was right when the evo 9 came out), I love that I could tell anyone that I daily drive an evo and nobody would question why I have it and how great of a car it is.

Hopefully i can provide some info here, i used to own a 03 Lancer evo 8 not to long ago.The vehicle is sharp looking as u mentioned but like a daily car.....not even close to recommending it to anyone!

Bad: No cruise control, eats gas like no tomorrow(18mpg on highway),bad turning radius(could not even do a decent U turn to safe its life), repair cost and maintenance is really high(decent brake pads $120+ for a ok set of fronts only),transmission is the weakest link on this vehicle,u cant launch it because u will break it like 02-03 wrx manual transmission, the shift linkage is by cable so must of the time on higher rpm u might grind and also does not feel natural or maybe "mechanical" as Subaru or Honda transmission do,seats are bucket seats not like STI buckets that are a little paded so ur back is going to suffer on long trips, transmission gear ratio on 5th gear is like 4k+ RPM.....did i mentioned transmission sucks?!

Good:Track car, suspension is solid the vehicle feels planted on the road, even on high speed cornering,POWER, these engines can easily make 400whp with the right turbo,on stock form, with a turbo back exhaust and tuning,320whp-350whp is easily attainable but remember....transmission is going to crap....reliability of the 4g63 engine is way better than subaru and easier to work on thanks to L4 config., i used to get compliments everywhere i go as is a rare car,big support on parts!

My opinion is this,if is going to be a weekend warrior/track car,and can replace that transmission for cheap, then perfect vehicle, as a daily to me it was not a good choice....and i opted for a legacy/impreza platform...hope this can help u! :)

The evo in question is a 9 not a 8 and should have the 6spd transmission which is not a weak transmission by any stretch. Me personally for ease of repairs and maintenance I'd go with the evo. Much easier to work on then the boxer engines and much more reliable at higher power levels. I do like my legacy but do very much miss my awd talon which is basically a evo just 2 doors instead of 4.

Nice looking escort. Very tastefully done.

As far as I know the 6 speeds in the evo's were actually weaker than the 5 speeds. But it's not a problem at power levels below 400ish.

If it's a close friend, see if he will take some cheap monthly payments, say 150-200 dollars with some "best friend" interest say 2%ish. That way you get the car and he gets some monthly income possibly tax free if he is able to hide it. "Going to keep it mostly Stockish"--FAMOUS LAST WORDS LOL!! I would not be able to sleep until I modified that capable AutoXer! I'd keep ALL if possible and just add a new toy to your garage. I sure wouldn't want to see that spec B go! That Evo is definitely sexy so I can understand your dilemma! Sorry I couldn't be of more help:lol:. Good luck!!

I like the Evolutions. Fan boi'd it on like every car game I can think of next to the STi (so long as it wasn't bug eye) I think the TME was my favorite. I remember a guy in NoVa with one registered as a Mirage for the longest. Lost touch with him so no clue how that is now. Even the kids in the back had Recarro baby seats.

Coming from a guy with a dead 05 Leggy and non folding rear seats, I could handle it as a DD. My tuned Cruze Eco's (My DD) only strong suit is 50 MPG when i'm not always "running late" for everything. From a running and driving Shrek B standpoint, I'd still hold on the the B.

+1 on the wing delete if it's a DD unless you are always "running super late" everywhere you go.

I've kept my spec B mostly stockish!

The escort is where i dump my money. I'm rollin $30k deep on that poor car. It's my first car, so it's got sentimental attachment. I'd never get rid of it.

I will preface this with, I love the way Evo 9's look! I almost got one over the Legacy, but I wanted something more comfortable (already had two uncomfortable race cars). After I got my legacy I rode in my coworkers Evo 8 and I was glad I didn't get one, I'm getting old (27) and need interior space for car seats .

Man you must have a Legacy that's different from all of ours .

With that sad, I might be interested in you Spec B if you get the Evo :).

Thanks!

Correct, 6 speed evo's use Nissan Sentra Spec V's gear boxes. I have the same FWD gearbox in my Infiniti right now. For us, FWD sub 3k lbs cars, these gear sets are good for 600+ WHP, strongest gearboxes Nissan has built for the Sentras. Thing is EVO's are 3500lbs and AWD, thus they aren't as strong, but still good enough for most people.
