transmission oils and diff oils

Make sure that you select the right type of oil for the gearbox since if you select the wrong you may kill your seals. Double-check your manual for that.

And for the differential - synthetic, and if you have limited slip differentials you should also verify that it works with that. Some oils contains additives that causes more slip in the LSD rendering them less effective. And other oils contains specific additives for LSD:s (which doesn't matter if you lack LSD)

If you don't have a LSD it's not that sensitive, but check your manual anyway.

Also check this thread: http://www.legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=62614

75W90 seems to be the recommended viscosity.

And a synthetic oil is more resilient to breakdown than a dino oil.

See more at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gear_oil

And I think that I would go for Castrol.

True, but you don't want to be mixing fluids. The only way to do a FULL replacement of the ATF is to do a flush. A drain will only replace about 4.5 to 5 quarts of the total 10 quarts in the system.

fullerslgt: Stick with Subaru OEM ATF. You have no reason to switch.

See my post for my experience

Another issue when it comes to transmission oil changes. The oil filter on the EAT4 - the version where the filter is on the gearbox. What number does that have? It does look like the engine oil filter, but that doesn't mean that it is identical.
