minus 6lbs of unsprung weight = WOW!

So i took the 225/45/17 eagle F1s off my stock rims and put them on some Volk LE37K rims that I bought used from another GT owner (thanks Ken!). I am in awe as to how much of a difference it made. The volks weigh around 14.5 lbs. With the stock rims any little bump would cause the car to over-react and you could feel the wheels losing contact. When you're going fast it's very scary what happens when you hit a bump. But with the volks, the car just floats over the bumps. The stock suspension can actually keep the wheel on the road now. I wonder why subaru put such horribly inadequate shocks and springs on the car. They're next to be replaced, but now i'm not in as much of a rush...

Thanks for the report. This is definitely something to consider and surely makes going to 18" rims a more difficult (and expensive) proposition.

I totally agree with the shocks/springs comment. Having introduced Spec.B's and being in rallying for so long, it's clearly obvious to Subaru that good dampers are very important.

i haven't noticed as much of a difference in braking and accelleration. the car does seem to pull a little better off the line, but i don't care to try and accurately measure it, and it could just be psychological. as far as braking goes, i have no idea, i haven't gotten on them that hard.

cornering is definitely better than before (the same tires on the stock rims). part of it is probably due to a more square sidewall, but it's also because the wheels stay planted on the road over bumpy surfaces.

i'll try and post some pics this weekend...

heheh....I'm saving 17lbs per corner with my newest set of BBS ;) Yes, for the MINI  Think I'll notice the difference? Stock = 48lbs for wheels and tires (runflats). New wheels - 10.4lbs - new tires - 20.5lbs. :icon_bigg

I have 17" OZ SL's w/Pilot Exalto PE2's for the summer and I agree. I can definitely notice a difference compared to my stock wheels with Nokian WR's. I'm getting either the Koni or Tokico struts when more reviews are out.

wow! 48 lbs is a lot of wheel for such a tiny motor. it's going to feel like a brand new car...

there's definitely a tremendous difference as I autoxed this weekend with the GT. Here are the two different rims I ran, but EVERYTHING else is practically the same except for the course layout:

1) 12.5 lbs SSR Comps & 225/45/17 Falken Azenis RT-615s

2) 17.5+ lbs Buddy Club PII+ & 225/45/17 Falken Azenis RT-615s

Let's just put it this way, I drove well in both cases.. weather being a highg 85F. The acceleration is slow and the braking is surely different, the handling is more understeerish with the Buddy Clubs as I had to dial in the rear Zeals to full stiff to make the rear end come around for me, otherwise, it would just keep understeering.

Magnetic1 missed out my DRFT action move around the showcase turn on Sunday.. I'll look up a pic for it later, but as far as the weight goes, 5 lbs and up is a huge difference.. afterall, we are talking about nearly a 33% weight loss in the rim alone, or at least 13% worth of weight lost overall (42 lbs/48 lbs).

Thats the other thing that I noticed. I can't explain it, but my otherwise stock car has a lot less understeer as a result of the lighter wheels. Never would have guessed it, but it's true. it's still all understeer if you go into a corner to hot, but on throttle through a corner and coming out there's more oversteer.

ah, I found something that will help show the difference in what weight can do on JUST the difference in rims.. in 2005, I ran with SSRs Comps in 17x7.5 with 225/45/17 Falken Azenis RT-615s.. compared to this one event that I ran with some 17x7.5 Buddy Club P2s and the same size 225/45/17 Falken Azenis RT-615s (weighing 5+ lbs more overall), you can see the difference in comparison to the average times and such..:

STU (using Buddy Club P2s, 18 lbs rims)

STU (using SSR Comps, 12.5 lbs rims)
