mid atlantic gasoline

Hey guys I figured this would be the most accurate place to start this thread...i have a tuning appointment coming up and I want the best gas available for the session. I wanted a place where we could share our thoughts on the best gas in the general area seeing as the quality differs across america. So...what are your thoughts?

Im gonna go ahead and throw in the thought of shell gas. I normally fill up with their VPower (93 Octane) if I can make it to a shell station, and I've heard numerous times that their gas is the best for any automobile engine. Whether that's true or not...is a whole nother story.

What do you prefer?

Do yourself a favor, and get tuned on the fuel you'll mostly run. If that's Shell, then fill up at Shell.

I typically fuel up at a 7-11 owned station near my office, or a Gulf station on the way to work. But for the most part, I stick to major brands. Exxon, BP, and Shell.

I avoid "cheap" stations (Free State, Lowest Price, and mom/pop type places) and Sunoco as much as I can, though.

If it's top-tier gas, who cares?

Most stations, at least in the Baltimore area, use Carroll Independent or Oceanic as their distributors, no matter what logo is on the station. So it's all about the additives in the end -- none of which are going to increase octane.

BTW, I use Sunoco, even though they're not top-tier, because they're cheap (lowest price for 93 in Owings Mills/Randallstown, usually) and convenient (only a bit more than a mile from my place).

TFH - Do you know if ethanol is mixed by the vendor (not the station, but the vendor e.g. Shell or BP), or mixed at the distributor?

It has been increasingly difficult to find anything but E10.

Sunoco always gives me bad fuel economy :(

I actually thought something was REALLY wrong with my Forester, because I ONLY filled up at the Sunoco by 108 and 32. Then one day I was afraid I wouldn't make it, so I filled up at a then Chevron. That tank got 4mpg better than Sunoco. I filled up there again the next time, and the same thing. I haven't been to a Sunoco since.

I'm fairly sure it's mixed by the distributor.

I'm sure you know this, but I'm guessing a few other people don't. The reason everyone has gone to E10 is that gasoline needs an anti-knock agent with a high octane in order to raise the octane. From the dawn of the internal-combustion gasoline engine until the 1970s, that anti-knock agent was tetra-ethyl lead. Then, with the advent of emissions controls, they found that tetra-ethyl lead fouled catalytic converters, so they switched to methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) as the anti-knock agent. Fast forward to the early to mid-2000s, and scientists discover that MTBE is a carcinogen that's contaminating groundwater tables. So the government outlawed MTBE and mandated that everyone switch to an anti-knock agent that isn't lead and isn't MTBE -- enter ethanol, which has an octane of around 105, but a lower specific energy, which causes the crap MPG that everyone gets on E10. Ethanol is cheap/subsidized and non-toxic, so everyone's going to be using it for the foreseeable future.

Shame. The fuel economy hit of E10 is noticeable.

Yep. There's a few places.

Tuckers in Damascus has some. There's also a place on main-street in Damascus that sells 100 octane from a pump.

I believe VP Racing's website has a dealer locator.

GTFOout.

I wish I had E85 readily accessible. I'd probably tune for it.

But then again, I wouldn't want to sacrifice the range. I'd have to fill up practically every day!

I usually fill up at the Shell on 198 between Laurel and Burtonsville because it is the cheapest top tier gas close to my daily route. You should see the place on thursdays when its an extra 5 cents off. The line is down the road, its crazy. But I've always had a good experience with their gas.
