LegacyDan
Im looking to fit an adjustable actuator to the new vf36 turbo i bought recently and im wondering what would be the best one to go for. I heard the stock one is pretty weak and doesnt hold boost well over 5k rpm. Anyone have some recommendations?
Boostin1657615274
I don't know much about the VF36 but most adjustable wastegate actuators are just a universal part: http://www.atpturbo.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=TP&Product_Code=ATP-WGT-031&Category_Code= http://www.atpturbo.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=TP&Product_Code=ATP-WGT-009&Category_Code= I've never even seen a VF36 because they were never sold in the US, but I would be reluctant to spend time and money on an actuator for a stock turbo. If you use a 3 port boost control solenoid and perhaps adjust the stock actuator a bit it's going to hold boost well enough. A stock turbo is going to run out of efficiency up top anyway. LegacyDan
looks like this: http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d3/desperatedano/IMG_20110125_140230.jpg How can you adjust the stock actuator? I was looking to get an adjustable actuator as i need to rotate up the compressor housing so it bolts up to TMIC, the stock actuator will probably be in the way
Deaks2
I would think the VF-36 and VF-37 actuators are identical. Mine is fine at high revs.
SonicSpecB
What TMIC are you going to run?
LegacyDan
will be sticking with the stock TMIC for now. i need to rotate the compressor housing so that the turbo inlet points vertical instead of horizontal so i can connect to the stock top mount. because of this the actuator bracket needs modification. So went from this: http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d3/desperatedano/IMG_20110125_135108.jpg to this: http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d3/desperatedano/IMG_20110127_181344.jpg I came across this: http://cgi.ebay.ie/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280616228677&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_1852wt_1139 It looks like it has an adjustable bracket which should do the job and the actuator shaft looks like it has a bit of adjustment on it too. My tuner told me to go for one that will crack open at about 1 bar
SonicSpecB
Nice if this works gimme a shout i've got a VF 37 to install and was thinking bout rotating the housing to fit on my HKS TMIC.
LegacyDan
Nice if this works gimme a shout i've got a VF 37 to install and was thinking bout rotating the housing to fit on my HKS TMIC. it does work,i know a guy on another forum thats done it. you need to change DP UP and headers to though for bolt on fit or else lots of custom pipework modified actuator bracket: http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d3/desperatedano/DSCF0317-Small.jpg custom silicone intercooler pipe: http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d3/desperatedano/DSCF0315-Small.jpg Small bit of modification needed to connect to stock centre cat section with 3" DP http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d3/desperatedano/DSCF0320-Small.jpg
underpowerd
i love my forge awga; not sure if they have a model for the 36 though. but they are very serviceable (basically you can take everything apart into peices) might be worth a retrofit with a custom bracket, if possible. you can buy the 4-spring set and go from ~7 to ~25 psi. LegacyDan
Nice if this works gimme a shout i've got a VF 37 to install and was thinking bout rotating the housing to fit on my HKS TMIC. so i got a chance to fit this onto the vf36 today and it took me a whole 10 mins to install, much easier to do when turbo is not in the car! http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d3/desperatedano/DSC_7416.jpg http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d3/desperatedano/DSC_7417.jpg http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d3/desperatedano/DSC_7418.jpg
Deaks2
Neat. Can you show me what your TMIC looks like?
LegacyDan
im still on standard tmic but heres how it looks using standatd tmic, just a silicone elbow needed instead. heres the HKS one sonic has i think: http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/7160/46866199.jpg
SonicSpecB
How much psi is set on that actuator?
mwiener2
you need a bigger turbo, not a bigger actuator My Mods List (Updated 8/22/17) 2005 Outback FMT Running on Electrons
LegacyDan
you need a bigger turbo, not a bigger actuator so whats wrong with the vf36? its good for about 310-320whp. And who said i got a bigger actuator?
mwiener2
by adjusting the actuator tighter, you are essentially increasing the spring size, thus a larger actuator there's nothing wrong with that turbo... it's just an oem size turbo. It's gonna run out of steam at the higher RPM's. A larger actuator will help hold the door closed, but you are running way out of the efficiency range. It's a flamethrower at that point. The only solution is a larger turbo My Mods List (Updated 8/22/17) 2005 Outback FMT Running on Electrons
LegacyDan
the main reason i got this actuator was because it can bolt on to vf36 with rotated compressor housing, standard one, i would need to modify the bracket which would be a pain in the ass.standard one opens at about .8 bar new one opens at 1 bar so not a huge difference between them
