Instead, FHI is developing an exciting new technology which is sure to revolutionize the driving experience. And the first of the patent applications covering and revealing that technology was just published on Oct 30, 2008. The patent application title has the ominous description "Air cannon" but it would be the size of a cannon only if you were an ant. It's mounted in the cabin near the center rearview mirror and shoots a series of smoke rings at the occupants. Only the rings are composed of a fragrance instead of smoke. The system can be set up so that driver and passenger experience different fragrances. I expect further patent applications to appear for this amazing technology. So, maybe, this is just around the corner for us here in the US. I can't wait to find out what "Cool Wind" and "Pleasure Time" smell like. On a serious note, one of the inventors was also one of the authors of the paper at http://www.cis.atr.jp/users/chika-o/DSP-Oshima.pdf. It sought to determine whether a lemon aroma made people more alert. I guess this device could be used to deliver ammonia to a driver which the computer thought was falling asleep. I actually like the illuminated cupholders and "pilot" light (red LED - coming from map light assembly) on my wife's 07 Tribeca.
