As I have found with various interior trim pieces in my car, if you haven't taken it apart yet, it seems like you are pulling, pushing or tugging too hard and might break it. But once you get it apart, you will see that its far sturdier than it appears and the second time you take it apart, man-handling is not a problem.

There may be a little indentation somewhere to insert a small flat blade screw driver. But don't know as I have a manual.

Took about 30 minutes, used a body panel tool (and :jedi: )and the clip came off:spin: , easy enough! All wired up, just need to run to lowes and get some clear tubing to extend the lighting a tad.

Thanks for the help

Well thats annoying. May be rigging a switch when I finally do this..

yea i thought the same thing when I did it... I ended up putting a switch in under the shift boot so its not visible. Honestly though, I haven't turned them off since I did the mod. The light isn't visible while driving unless I look down at them nor is it bright enough to overpower the map light that illuminates the shifter (my cupholder lights red). It really is perfect if you run it through the cigarette lighter

Just did this in my 2010 with the beautiful diffuser ring. Sadly the only type of LEDs I could find were white. The look is amazing, but I am definitely going to be buying a set of red to match the rest of the interior. Also looking at the installation guide for the Subaru OEM illumination kit, I am going to put another LED in the tray compartment in front of the shifter. I will try and post pics as soon as I get it all done! Thanks for the write up!!

So this is the path that I went for my install.

All the tools I used for the install

Purchased at O'Reilys auto for 11.99$, the only reason I went with these is because they were the only red ones at the store. These have the on/off switch but I did not keep the switch because I hard wired them in.

Basically, if you hard wire, you cant use the on/off switch

The insides of the 12V socket.

First I had to pop off the backing of the lights, then pop out the LEDs.

Second step is to grind the area down where you will be mounting the LED circuit board, as you can see I did it where the Subaru kit gets mounted. Make sure not to grind down too much, check the fitment as you go, you want to make sure it is very snug when sliding the LED circuit board in. Also, it makes it tons easier if you grind down the edges of the circuit board to ensure there are not sharp edges when trying to slide it in the slot.

After the grinding I positioned the circuit board so that the middle of it was dead center of the diffuser ring for maximum use of the lights.

The other corner of the cup holder, they are very snug and will not move at all.

After the two circuit boards were in position I used electrical tape to bring the wires to a central spot. This package has TONS of extra cable.

I cut about 3ft of the extra cable and since the cable is very fine I used a bridge to step up the wire gauge, and cleaned the look up a little with a maintenance loop.

It was very simple to wire in, I just used the purple with dots for the positive, and the black with dots as the ground. I went directly into my heated seats connecter so that they turn on when necessary. Credit goes to previous posts.

The final look, sadly I only have a Iphone as my camera and it does not capture the brightness these lights give off. The light can be seen all around the diffuser at a equal intensity. I am extremely satisfied with the overall look and have no complaints at all!

Hopefully this helps someone out that is thinking about doing this install. Total I spent no more than 20$, and maybe 1-2 hours worth of work, only because I need everything PERFECT and kept going back to change things. Thanks again to all the previous posts that helped me get this done properly.

Have a great day and good luck!

Question, I would like to have a light in the foot area, but I want it to be connected to the lights that are under the door, so they are only on when those lights are on, does anyone know where I can tap into and get that capability?

Easiest way would be to pull new wires into the doors and tap into the door lights.

I installed an LED kit in my 2013 Legacy 2.5 Limited. I got the parts from AutoZone. I got the Alpena NanoLEDz for the cupholder, Alpena 24" lightstips for the under dash LEDs and a small switch.

Alpena NanoLEDz

NanoLEDz installed in the cupholder. Then the rubber ring went over top.

Wiring the switch. Got the power from the shifter illumination wires so the lights come on with the car lights w/ the option to turn them off

Finally got around to doing this to my 2010 Subaru Legacy! I used the Alpena LEDs as well (I don't think they were the Nano ones posted above, mine were a wider strip I think) but they were too bright at 12v. Luckily they come in two strips so I wired the 2 in series into the 12v for the shifter illumination. Now they can even be controlled with the dimmer!
