Does my ride height look weird to you?

Recommended Posts

I was looking at my new Leggy today and realized that the front wheel gap is significantly greater than the rear. I asked my buddy who is the previous owner and he says that it is normal for legacy Gts. I know both previous owners, and while the car has Bilsteins, they tell me the springs are stock. I had an NA Leggy before this and it didn't have this gap so I want your opinion.

Does this look right to you?

Yes in general, the 4th gens front end do sit higher than the rears. Even after I lowered my car on H-Tech springs, it still sits that way with the rear lower than the front. Some of the vendors on here sell spacers for the rear to help raise the back end up to match the front. Otherwise, some of the other lowering spring out there have made the corrections to spring height and makes the car more level.

The reason it sits higher is because the Bilsteins require the spec B top hats which are a 1/2" higher then normal LGT top hats.

I was reading on this after seeing your quote. Threads are saying that these top hats raise the front end because the Spec B uses shorter front springs. I'm texting the PO now to see if he used the right top hats. Maybe not having the proper shorter springs are the issue.

Are new springs the answer? Or non-spec B struts?

I really like the Bilstein brand, it would be a shame to dump them. But handling is my #1 priority. This car has an incredible amount of mods to to stiffen the chassis and huge swaybars. I wouldn't even care if the front was meant to sit higher if it wasn't throwing off the natural weight balance.

The PO doesn't remember, this was done almost 10 years ago.

From pictures these look like the LGT top hats, can you confirm?

I just checked both my Legacy's, the Spec B is like the one in your picture. My 05 Wagon's hats stick up about 3/4".

Here's the wagon,

Yes, you have specB/JDM top has. That's why they're nearly flush with the top of the cut outs, instead of being 3/4" higher. Also the Bilstein's shaft is too large for the bearing in the regular top hats. The springs should of been changed when the shocks were put on.

You can get a set of STI pinks or Swift springs for this setup. Are your shocks still in okay shape?

The shocks are 7 years old but show no signs of failing... the car drives beautifully.

Looks like I'm going to have to keep an eye open in the marketplace, STI Pinks for the GT are quite expensive! (I assume I'm looking for JDM STi Pinks for the GT and not the Spec B because people are saying the spec B springs are longer to account for the heavier tranny). And MT springs because I have an MT, right? Someone in another thread was saying to use AT springs, but that just doesn't seem right.

Thank you so much for your help!

You could PM m sprank he's the one who offered us the Koni and Epic spring deal in the past. He would know what springs you need.

Go with Swift Springs for the Bilsteins. I have Bilstein HD Struts, Spec B tophats, and Swift Springs and it's an amazing setup. It'll get rid of that monster truck look you have going on as well...

I'd like your impression on ride quality/comfort with the Swift springs on the HDs. I have the Spec B wagon pinks with the HDs on my Outback and the thing is quite harsh. There are a lot of generally neglected roads here (think uneven patch jobs, tree roots pushing up the pavement, etc...)

Luckily, here in TN, we have pretty good roads. The ride is stiff, but perfectly drivable for every day situations. Bumpy roads are usually not a problem, it's the big bumps that really suck. I really enjoy the setup. I've taken a 12 hour round trip in one go on these up to Ohio and back and didn't really have any pain in my back or anything like that. And the roads in Ohio SUCK. It's a good setup.

Are you fitted with 17" or 18" wheels in your photo's?

I have the same setup as you ECP. Bilstein HDs and stock springs. I have 3/4" spacers in the rear though and the back sags ever so slightly, but not nearly as bad as yours.

Yeah I've got a bit of ass sag lol
