DVD/NAV HU Install

Recommended Posts

Ok I'm on the fence about buying a LGTL. I know that an aftermarket head unit/dvd/nav can be installed in the cubby, but my question is this how do you get the needed wires from the stock radio to the aftermarket headunit? I searched and only found people talking about where to put the head unit but nothing about how to hook it up. all help is appreciated.

i am in the middle of this right now.

you need a reverse wiring harness (Scosche #SU03RB - connects to stock HU), a wiring harness (Scosche #SU03), and an antenna adapter (Metra #40-SB10).

the SU03 connects to the factory harness you remove from the stock stereo. you must also supply power, ground, and illumination to the stock HU, so those need to be tapped off as well and connected to the reverse harness.

additionally, i took the front speaker outputs of the stock HU and ran them to a lineout converter, and will be inputting them to one of my aftermarket stereo's AUX inputs so the stock HU will function as a 6 disc changer.

here's a simple diagram (hope you can read it :p):

i was really turned off by the stereo when looking at the LGT, but i'm glad i took the plunge. soon i will have a stereo with FEATURES again! :D

This is my harness I made. I got the forward and reverse harnesses from a guy on NASIOC, these hace the 14th wire needed for dimming. When you connect the harnesses they're plenty long to make it to the new HU.

keep us posted as to the progress. One day I hope to do the same. I am curious to hear how ou fel the 6 disc performs as an auxillary.

i finally finished.....and it works great! the JDM DIN cubby adapter won't even allow my aftermarket stereo to open (flip-down face to insert CD), so i'm glad i did the stock HU through the LOC into the AUX input. not a big deal with 6 CD's in the stock unit, and a 40Gig MP3 player going into the second AUX input. i may just record a MP3 CD of my favorite driving tunes, pry off the vent cover, and stick the CD in "semi-permanently". if i get bored and want to change the CD in the head unit, i can always just remove the vent cover (easy - just pops off), and throw another MP3 CD in there in a couple months or whatever. i may play with moving the unit out farther to see if i can get it to open, but its not a big deal.

note to people considering an aftermarket stereo with a flip-down face: it probably won't open with the JDM DIN adapter.

From what I've seen most won't, however, I got lucky and my Alpine VDA-9855 works like a champ. No problems with the face hitting the Din adapter. Do you happen to have a Sony?
