Started building my new box yesterday...

roughly 8 cubic feet. i might have to make some mods to it to add another cube or so. it's going to have 2 ports (i built in tuning it to 37hz and an attachable port extension which will tune it to 28hz). it'll house 2 15" Resonant Engineering XXX subs. to save up more room in the box, the subs will be invert-mounted on top of the box. for bracing i'm going to use metal L-brackets on inside edges and 2 -all thread rods going through the middle of the box. also, the top of the box will be a double-baffle, with the sub recessed to the lower level of MDF. i've got some sick plans for finishing the box, so i'll keep this up to date.

just one question... Why?

why what? why fill my car with stereo equipment? it's a hobby, a love, a passion. call it what you will, but a long, relaxing drive is what puts me in the best mood, especially surrounded in music (literally). crisp highs and deep lows are what i look forward to after a day of work or wherever i end up leaving.

nice start. i put a ported box in my mazda sp23 hatch ( two 10s ) and yeah the weight slowed things down, but it won't stop me from doing the same when i get my liberty. the sales rep was proud the liberty comes with a full alloy spare wheel in the boot and here i was thinking "well that'll be sitting in my garage taking up space" lol

good luck, show us the pics as you get more done!

elarbee, your install looks great. i still have to order my dash kit/wiring harness/ant. adaptor before i throw everything else in the car. but, within like 2 weeks it should all be said and done!

thanks mate! it's all coming out again tomorrow and i'll be back on stock :( until my suby arrives :)

this was only my second install but each one gets sweeter ( and more bloody expensive lol )

some more work got done tonight... cut out openings for the subs, cut out openings on the top baffle sheet, installed some L-brackets for bracing, built the port and port extension, and sanded down rough edges. next work date... putting in the port, finishing bracing, screwing/glueing it all together, painting it!

Very nice and I hear you on loving sound in your car and even else where. I have a 1000 watt Logitech System for my computer and god knows how big of a system in my car. I've thought about taking out the spare in my car (97 GT sedan) to build a custom hidden box, but for the distances and roads I drive my car on I need the security of having that if something went wrong. Very nice setup though and I cant wait to see the finished product.

Noooooo! Arrrgghhhhh!!! Please tell me the box for the Alpine 12s is for another car! Everybody knows you don't mix subs in the same car. It may win show points but the sound will suck.

One day I'll build a massive setup just to have it. I've built countless walls for other people and now I've got an ext. cab fullsize GMC just begging to have a SPL setup in the back. I've got a JBL 1200.1 amp in the closet, never touched. A high output alternator for a GM truck is really cheap & easy. Maybe I should go crazy :D

Just for fun I entered my old Grand Marquis in a contest to see what it could hit. With a plain $100 JBL 12 running on half of a JBL 80x4 amp, it hit 141.3 -- I was happy.

SPL is not objective, it depends on the car, the mic, conditions etc (like comparing dyno plots from two different cars on two different dyno's on different days). I've hit 142dB with 800w of Phoenix Gold and a JL15W6 in a ported enclosure. Low/Mid 130's is easy with basic gear. Higher than that, it's usually an aberration for inexpensive stuff to compete.
