Intake silencer removal walk-through

Recommended Posts

I've seen a lot of people asking for a walkthrough with photos as the one that was previously posted seems to be missing. So, I went ahead and removed mine took some pics and put it back in for the sake of the cause. I took the steps that jeepthrills (thank you for posting the steps and I hope you don't mind me using your steps. if you do, pm me and ill take it off no problem :) ) posted and simply added photos. Hope this helps those of you looking to remove the intake silencer.

It took me less than an hour to take out the silencer, take photos and then put it back in. If you are halfway decent at turning wrenches i cant see it taking more than 30 min. to complete this mod. Good luck!

Tools required: flat screwdriver, #2 Phillips Screwdriver, 3/8" or 1/4" drive ratchet, 10mm socket (I used a deep-well socket for a little extra reach), 8-9 inch socket extension , 10mm wrench (ratcheting is easier)

Has anyone done this mod and had a check engine light issue? I just did mine, but the stupid light came on.....lame.

Check to make sure your MAF did not come loose or rather make sure you have it plugged in correctly (given there is only one way to plug it in). You could try reseating the plug.

This should not cause any CEL errors whatsoever since it is only involving the removal of that silencer. No change in airflow or anything else. Just a wee bit louder on hearing your engine. :)

Hey OP, I appreciate this post and am going to do this modification hopefully this weekend. But one question I have is, can you make the font BIGGER? I can barely read what they say. Or at least change the color.

Thanks again!!!

My son did this for me when he installed a Parrin panel filter, back in the Summer of 2005. Car is still running great.

Love the sound, no adverse effects to gas mileage or anything else.

Is it fine to let the hole created by the removal of the "bowl" opened? I'm thinking we should cover it somehow, since no air usualy come in from there???

It's fine as long as you have an air filter. :o)

By the way, no errors yet. :o) So I don't know what people are talking about getting errors after the silencer removal.

forget about errors, it hurts performance. the end. try searching this is about the 1 billionth time this thread has happened

From removing a silencer??????

I guess I have a magical engine then. No performance increase, but it is a wee bit louder.

What it does is create a warm air intake. Air that's come through the radiator/AC condenser is considerably warmer than the air the snorkus picks up. Mileage should be the same, but power will be down!
