Does anyone have any engine removal tips?

Recommended Posts

Well I just started to remove parts from the 05 Leggy to get my engine out. I have pulled engines on FWD cars before so I am kind of familiar with the process but am a little stuck with where to really start. I will be pulling the Rad and AC condenser along with the fans of course. How much of the suspension/front drivetrain parts need to come out? Do I need to seperate the motor at the transmission or the differential. If I am off track on these parts let me know and if there is a how to or pictures of where to start please point me in that direction. Thanks.

Here is my thread about rebuilding my motor: http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/underdogs-ej255-teardown-rebuild-122981.html?t=122981

PM me your email address and I'll send you the FSM for engine removal.

*Tip* You don't need to drain/disconnect your AC. Just unbolt the compressor, take the hoist bracket off the compressor, move the compressor to the battery area (see pics in my thread) and put the hoist bracket back on the engine.

Don't need to remove any suspension stuff.

No problem. Here are some good places to start:

1. Remove battery

2. Remove OEM Airbox

3. Remove Intercooler

4. Separate downpipe (post-turbo in case you are new to Subarus) from turbo

5. Remove undertray

6. Drain coolant and remove radiator

7. Remove accessory belts

8. Remove alternator

9. Disconnect fuel lines w/ special tool, or at FPR (careful with this one obviously)

10. Disconnect main harness near turbo and ground harness under intercooler.

Having also come from primarely FWD before, pulling the engine on a Subaru is super simple. You don't have to do anything with the suspension/axles. Just disconnect the coolant/fuel hoses, remove radiator, pull the power steering pump and AC compressor off the engine and set aside, disconnect and remove starter, disconnect main harness, unbolt and separate engine and trans, unbolt engine mounts and remove engine.
