bballdude1414
would a stock sti muffler or axle back exhaust bolt right up on my 98 legacy? basically wanna get little louder but nothing mind blowing here
Zues Marine
nope, and it will barely be louder at all once you got it to line up. grab UEL headers for rumble and a decent aftermarket muffler like vibrant or SPT to define it
bballdude1414
wont i need to weld an aftermarket muffler? really tryin to find a bolt on, is that even possible?
Zues Marine
yeah, SPT makes bolt-on aftermarket cat-backs for the second gens here only the ones from japan say SPT on them, the US made ones say 2.5gt but its the same

Kennyfvholla
I have answered the WRX/STi exhaust question a million and three times... And it's not worth it.
twisty
I have answered the WRX/STi exhaust question a million and three times... And it's not worth it. no gains? same sound level? why not worth it?
Zues Marine
well for one, the catback portion is way bigger than stock so you end up losing back pressure.. which hurts power/mpg (barely, but still) and its about .5dB louder, you may not even notice a difference so essentially you'd end up spending ~$50+ on an exhaust tip that says wrx or sti
Matty2Hotty
Or you can just get a borla muffler or whatever you want with a offset/center inlet/outlet, hacksaw and hack off the muffler right at the stock muffler inlet, use a muffler clamp and tighten that baby on. If concerned, you can use a roll of universal hanger wrap at any auto parts store or drive it to a shop to have them weld on a hanger bracket for dirt cheap. Zues Marine
aftermarket mufflers without aftermarket headers sound like shit. Buy UELs and even your stock setup beyond that will purr louder if not, youll just sound like every other 4 cylinder car with a fart can, just barely deeper. buy UELs headers
Kennyfvholla
no gains? same sound level? why not worth it? With the WRX catback, there's not much more audible noise than a stock exhaust. It can't be heard while driving. The STi exhaust is noticeable but the tone is very limited on throttle and sounds meh It basically sounds like this: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLM-matbSSE]Stock STI exhaust - YouTube[/ame] I'd say there are absolutely no gains from it. Throttle response is much better, but there seamed to be part throttle power loss. well for one, the catback portion is way bigger than stock so you end up losing back pressure.. which hurts power/mpg (barely, but still) Loss of back pressure only hurts part throttle power. Overall power can be gained. It can shift the power band (very minutely) towards the upper RPM range. Throttle response increases with larger exhaust systems.. Zues Marine
yeah but how often are you putting a stock 2.5gt to redline? power gains shouldnt even be discussed really, especially with starting on exhaust as the first upgrade
Kennyfvholla
Not too often, but I was only explaining the basics of how a larger exhaust system affects how the motor makes power. But yes, it really doesn't matter on a engine that doesn't make a lot of power in the first place... With any "upgrade..."
