roundthirteen
Probably asked before but is there any advantages to keeping it on? Advantages to removing it? How about after I change out the stock TMIC and BPV for something a little better? My car's not a sleeper it's a hibernator. http://pure-tuning.com
iNVAR
you're right, it's been asked. search. engine cover is supposed to help make a better seal with the hood scoop and the tmic so that air goes where it's supposed to: through the tmic, not around it. http://www.google.com/#hl=en&tbo=d&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=engine+cover+removal+site:legacygt.com&oq=engine+cover+removal+site:legacygt.com&gs_l=hp.3...999.4420.0.4561.38.18.0.0.0.0.438.4012.0j7j7j1j2.17.0.les%3Beqn%2Ccconf%3D1-2%2Cmin_length%3D2%2Crate_low%3D0-035%2Crate_high%3D0-035%2Csecond_pass%3Dfalse%2Cnum_suggestions%3D2%2Cignore_bad_origquery%3Dtrue..0.0...1c.1.1AELx0UMszQ&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&fp=5a9b8f6711c43ac8&bpcl=35466521&biw=1280&bih=
famaya26
Well if you want your car to explode then go ahead remove it In all seriousness it helps the stock IC operate more efficiently. You can hack it up when installing an AVO TMIC and remove if you go with a FMIC.
Max Capacity
I've had mine off since a couple of day's after I bought my 2005 wagon in late June 2004 I took it off one day to look under it and I lost one of those plastic clips, and left it off ever since. I removed the one from my 09 Spec B too. I want to see the engine when I open the hood, not some piece of plastic. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). lee07
Don't think there are any + or -'s. I May be wrong here but sti's and wrx's don't have a cover I keep mine on so when people want to see what's under the hood it looks stock, even though its not

Rooster
The WRX and STI splitter also fits up against the tmic unlike the LGT one. This ^ Removing the cover isn't going to make anything explode, but it will hurt the efficiency of the intercooler, and therefore power. So removing it isn't recommended. Rooster
I don't know if the 2.5i had one or not, but with no TMIC, it doesn't matter. If you go to a front mount, feel free to remove the thing.

roundthirteen
Maybe I'll throw it back on until I get a better TMIC, now I have to get new bolts for it..... It's SO UGLY! I Donated Too luchadorjose Posted October 30, 2012 I Donated Too Share Posted October 30, 2012 I used my engine cover without the pop-its ever since I bought the car. because of where it sits and how the splitter presses on it, it doesn't go anywhere
Nubie
It sounds like the cover bothers you as much as it bothered me. Removed it, but kept the functionality. Also It doesnt have to be as involved as I showed there, I can explain if you want to do it. Or i guess I can edit that thread later. http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/engine-cover-relocation-190220.html

I Donated Too luchadorjose Posted October 31, 2012 I Donated Too Share Posted October 31, 2012 Took mine off didn't see and noticeable changes... Are you logging IAT's, IAM, or timing compensation? It's only a matter of a handful of horsepower in certain situations. "Butt dyno" isn't a valid tool to say you didn't notice any change
Rooster
If I get bored in the next few days maybe I'll do a bit of logging with and without it to see how much of a difference it makes. I'm kind of digging the mod to attach it to the hood, since I'm very much not a fan of engine covers. Only reason I still have it is to keep that intercooler working as efficiently as possible. iNVAR
You can't monitor IAT to determine TMIC efficiency. The IAT sensor is located near the airbox, before the TMIC.
Rooster
True, but you can monitor load. If the intercooler is being significantly less efficient, the air will be less dense after it, therefore less load at the same boost. (Unless I'm crazy, feel free to correct me). Not as nice at looking at a temperature, but really a bit more relevant to real world performance anyway.
Rooster
Alright, so I actually tested this today by monitoring load for 3 pulls (one with the cover, one without, and another with). Conclusion: Doesn't matter. Max load didn't change by more than .02g/rev between any of the runs, and looks to be within the error I'd anticipate. So, even though I said it should theoretically make a difference, it doesn't look like it does in the real world, at least in the conditions I was in.
