Pulling To the Right Normal?

Recommended Posts

Long story short, ever since i bought my 06 LGT i always thought it was pulling to the right. Brought it to the dealership, 3 times was there, first time said it wasn't pulling, second time i told them to align it anyway and my steering wheel while pulling away was cocked 3" to the right (that made me happy), third they fixed the wheel and and said they aligned it the second time and just moved the wheel this time....either way it feels the same...the guy told me it was normal to pull to the right because they never converted the suspension form japan because japan has left hand road...is that bullshit or is there actually some truth to this. i know some roads are crowned and cars pull to the right, but i have never had a car i would have to hold on to the steering wheel all the time...then again never had an AWD or a suburu. Thanks for any input this is really bothering me.

define pulling to the right? do you feel the steering wheel pulling to the right or is the car drifting to the right when you let go of the wheel. Also how is your tire pressure did you do a cold check on it. Do you feel any vibration in the steering wheel? need more info:)

It's sometimes a hard call to make since the test road has to be absolutely flat and most roads are sloping a bit to the side to allow for better draining of water. This can manifest itself as a slight pull to either side (depending on which side of the road you drive). It may also be that the alignment is computed for driving on the left side for our cars since they are actually made in a country where people drive on the left side.

As long as it isn't bad and there is no excessive tire wear it's no big problem. Tire pressure does also play a big role so if you haven't checked your tire pressure maybe it's time to do that!

Pull = The wheel is fighting you going down the road or you must keep the wheel slightly turned to go straight.

Drift = A slight movement to the left or right when you let go of the wheel.

Big difference...almost all cars drift, usually due to tires, road crown, etc.

the guy told me it was normal to pull to the right because they never converted the suspension form japan because japan has left hand road...is that bullshit

Considering that your car was made in Indianna....I smell BS:(

I have to agree someone is blowing smoke up your tailpipe. Take it to a good alignment shop you trust & see what they say, also have them test drive it.

Yeah, try what lousypirate recommended... This has happened to me in the past where my car pulled to the left after my wheels were aligned. It was due to the fact that the tires were worn slightly unevenly. I rotated the tires and it was muuuuuch better.

they rotated the tires from front to back, made no difference..brand new tires in front and good tires in rear....i am not ignorant when it comes to cars ive had many and worked on many, i even aligned my integra when i built it myself by eye and it still didnt pull as bad as this lmao....i am thinking it just a subaru thing since this is the first subaru i drove...when i let go of the wheel, it goes right, every time, harder than a honda ever would. any other car i have driven goes alot straighter than my new lgt.

You do realize that the AWD is very touchy when you mix new & old tires right? If the outside circumference between any of the tires is greater than 1/4" it can damage the AWD unit (Center Diff)...the Owners Manual explains this pretty clearly.

Plus see my post above...you have a drift, not a pull. 99% of the time a drift is caused by a tire concern...

BAHAHAHA:lol::lol::lol:

You've changed tires front to rear, but have you changed them side to side o_O? for ten minutes of work, it's worth a try...

btw: drainage ftw!

Mine does it (pull) since I picked it up with 9K miles. Upgraded to 18's and still. Took once to the dealer and had it aligned and still did it. (Sorry Will, never had time to take it back). A few weeks back did a 30K, had them rotated and still.

I'm going to try a shop here that has the above mentioned system and does a couple of race cars and stuff so I will update.

are they directional? it would say so on the tire itself. changing them right to left won't affect anything, unless it starts pulling the other direction or something. then you need new tires, or to be rebalanced. the reason i posed the question was to cross that off the list of possible reasons for this, if it still goes right, then your tires are fine and the suspension isnt right

btw: i can take my hands off the wheel on some roads and it goes arrow straight. that is how your car should be. but i've never taken my car to your section of NY, so i dunno how the roads drain there. road design is key to this phenom.

I'd say normal. All 3 of my Legacy GT's 98' 00' and 05' have pullled/drifted to the right at one time or another. Sometimes they fine. The 05 now has 93,000 miles, never been aligned. The 00' had 78,000 miles, never had it aligned, the tires wear even. I'm leaving it alone.

305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD).  CHECK your oil, these cars use it.

OK im from G2's neck of the woods, only about 20 mins up the road to be exact. Where are you driving? Give me a location so next time i go to Khol's i can go there. You could have a defective spring, tire belt issues, or just a crappy toe setting. Caster and camber arnt adjustable without extra parts on this car. Tell the place youd like a PRINT OUT of your #'s from your alignment. You need to go to a place you trust because shops will do the free readout and mess with it just to take your money. Not sayin all shops are thieves but iv worked at enough of them to know what they do.

My OBW-limited drifted/pulled to the right on occasion. However, I tried with my LGT and it stays put. Even my dad tried to see if it would when he drove it and he said, "The car is really tight" because it would not drift in either direction.

i am thinking of going to another subaru stealership and drive one of there new lgt's saying i'm thinking about trading in just to see if it pulls like this....its annoying not being able to take my hand off the steering wheel for more than a second, within three seconds on any road ill be eating mailbox. anyone scheduling a meet anytime soon in ny would really love to take a ride in someone elses lgt to see how different it is.

Our (my wife's) 05 LGT wagon has pulled right since day one. My semantics regarding pulled/drifted are not fully developed.

My sequence of actions:

1) had dealer rotate tires for 'radial pull', no change

2) had dealer perform a full 4 wheel alignment through a local alignment specialist (front caster was within 0.1deg, reported toe negligible all around). Yup that's right, no change

3) I had my control arms replaced due to ripping bushings. Post alignment, *no change* (alignment showed negligible toe all around and equal caster)

4) I swapped over to some JDM bilsteins and pinks (it's from a RHD car!!), post alignment *no change*. alignment again at zero toe all around, and about -1deg neg camber in the front. I also went to Sti BBS wheels at this stage, but their offset is stock.

I have also frequented a stretch of freeway in orange country, Socal, and i have got the car to pull *left* through the above metamorphosis. I have concluded that the car is sensitive to road crown. I seem to recall an Aussie complaining of his car pulling left, and that kind of fits into the hypothesis. At any rate, I have learnt to ignore.

Preferably while standing next to your car, so you can point at that little sticker on the window that says "Made in Indiana" (or whatever... I removed mine) when he's done talking out his ass.
