Train Horn Install Complete!

Recommended Posts

Just thought I'd share the finished product for the train horn install I did. The video is rather self-explanatory, so I'll just let it do the explaining. The sound comparison is worthless since both horns sound equally loud. I have a Galaxy Note, and I know for a fact that the microphone doesn't register anything above 91 dB, so as you can imagine, it doesn't really work for testing the train horns at such close proximity.

Original air horns. They just didn't have that "presence" that I was looking for.

Working on the custom box to mount the louder "train horns."

Air line runs out through the foot of the roof rack.

I don't really intend to go around scaring people and making "train horn terror" videos like some people online do. It's really more so that I can make a point to people who cut me off, or who fly into the traffic circle without yielding and also just for the novelty, lol. I just always found the stock horns on this car to not really have enough grunt to make a point to stupid people.

Not to mention, the main justification for this installation was to have a portable air setup that could be used for other things. The fact that it could be used for train horns is just a great added bonus! I'm trying to turn this car into a "utility truck."

16 posts in 2 years and thats your next post Shoe? FAIL. You are aware this is a forum where we dump THOUSANDS into our cars to drive like jerks right?

Way to go OP! That thing is wicked. I've been wanting loud horns but am completely unwilling to externally mount... Well, maybe some chrome ones on the Dodge Durango  Taking them outside the car must really knock up the volume and projection forward facing. Onboard air is awesome.

This is one of the coolest things I've seen on this forum just in terms of ingenuity. You see these horns in trucks occasionally but the way you installed it is incredible. It looks like you just have a suitcase or some luggage on the roof rack at first glance so it doesn't look too conspicuous.

Oh I'm not NEVER going to be an ass. That would be un-possible, lol. But I'm not going to go around blasting everyone all the time, lol. I did honk it in a tunnel earlier today and it was freaking hilarious!

Thanks for the compliments guys! I suppose the only thing I would improve would be making the box a bit more... aerodynamic, but it's a good starting point!

When you're about to cross train tracks in slow traffic with several drivers in front of you (about to cross or in the process of crossing)... I wouldn't be able to resist the temptation.

I'm glad to see you did it. I love those things. I don't have a roof rack so my 4 horns are under the hood/behind the grille. I don't understand why you have the first dash switch that turns off your stock horn. I don't go around indiscriminately blasting people with mine either. They have to "earn" it by doing something completely inept or dangerous. (Inept is my new favorite word)

Ahaha. I remember being jealous of your setup!

Same here. These horns are reserved for those rare people who deserve it. The first switch is because I want to be able to have either horn or both. I don't want the stock horn honking along with the train horn because although you would think it would be drowned out (true) the train horns have a slight delay since they are air powered.

How did you fit your horns in front of your radiator. That's where I had mounted the Hella Air Chime kit, but these horns were just WAAAAYYYY too big to fit in there. I suppose you have a different kit...?

I have the same horns as you, (different compressor/tank). I only was able to fit the largest of the 4 behind the grille. The second largest went below the radiator. The remaining 2 shot straight down through a gaping hole in the rear of the passenger side engine compartment.

Ha ha stang! I asked you if you had checked out stevena's setup!!! I am so jealous! I'll have to get some one of these days but I'll start w/Hellas. The compressor in the back is totally justifiable for all sorts of reasons.

This got me to thinking that a 'brake check' switch would be really useful for jerks following too close, albeit illegal.

air source.... want more info. what pump, where did ya get it and how much did it run. same questions for the rest.

That is the kit I have. Stang70 has a larger tank with a larger compressor which makes it more suitable for an on board air system. That Sears compressor you are talking about is not designed, nor will achieve 150 psi.
