2000 Outback Drift Tank

Recommended Posts

Last fall I was in desperate need for a car to get to and from work, I had been driving my girlfriend's 01 outback that we slightly modified over the course of the year but our hours were changing at work and we were gonna need separate cars. So I picked up a 2000 outback wagon from my dad for 1600, ran great, was a 5spd(rare-ish in outbacks!), very little rust, and had a super clean black/grey interior! Well, the first thing I did to it was tear the interior out because I wanted to build a rally car. Like two weeks after that I said screw the rally car idea, because I want a drift car. I paid my dad off for the car, did the rwd conversion, welded the rear diff, slammed it on 3 good coilovers with 1 blown rear (no fucks given, they were laying around), added some caster(think it was about 2 degrees positive), put 2 of my 3 good 17x7 dr-9's on the front (I see a pattern here) and some cheap 15" forester steelies on the rear with 205/70/15's on them. I burned those off in a day and a half and went to 195/60/15's instead. Much more spin, much less sidewall. Good all around. Removed my rear bumper beam (jdm impreza's don't have them, why should I?), airbags, cruise control module, entire ac system, got an aftermarket steering wheel+ quick release, and hydro handbrake. Weight before driver's airbag, rwd conversion, bumper and ac removal, and coilovers was 3180 with me in it, so 3050 without. Now I should be down in the area of 2990 or even lower (i should get it weighed again). It drifts really, really nice. I need to get video of it soon.

Motor pulled after spitting a rod bearing a couple weeks ago mid-burnout:lol:, ready for teardown and new shortblock, along with a mild shave and tuck. Can't wait for this snow to go away!

Well I've already got my motor out and stripped down, just need to slap a new head on the drivers side of the new shortblock because the chunks of piston bent a valve. This is how my piston came out.http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/03/01/u5adurag.jpg

Pop the tail section off the Tranny and the diff is right there. Weld the spider gears to the case and pull your front axles. Rwd!

Why do you have to weld the front diff if you pull the front axles from it? Then you can just let it spin freely no? Or does welding it allow more power to be distributed to the rear?

Staying n/a but going to either a 5.0 or 351w, mustang t-5, 8.8 rear end with 4.10's and a spool. Working mad overtime right now to save up for it, one day off every other week, its rough but its money for swap. Should have enough by the end of may or June for the parts car. Going carbureted with a 650 cfm edelbrock 4bbl and msd ignition with the rev limiter set low, at 4-4.5k rpm so it can hit rev limiter without blowing up. I already have all the tools and materials I need to swap it, should be relatively simple. I think I can even use the legacy coilovers on it, with mild modifications.
