KILLER deal on Lower control arms

Recommended Posts

No need to buy new knuckles, if your bolt breaks you can drill it out and then use a longer bolt, lock washer, and nut and then it will never again be stuck

Also if your lucky and the bolt doesn't break (don't bet on it, both of my legacy bolts broke), it's much easier to pop the ball joint out of socket while the knuckle is on the car. On my FXT (somehow magically bolts didn't break), I was able to easily pop the ball joints out with a prybar. While on the legacy I had to cut the ball joint to slivers to get it out.

Going on past experience wrenching my car, I think I can guess which way its going to go!

PB blast the **** out of them, tap them a million times with a hammer at different angles, PB blast them some more. Do this a couple times over a day or two. When you're trying to undo them, try tightening them first. Don't even need to make them turn, just give it pressure in that direction. PB blast them again, hit it with a hammer again. Then try loosening them. I've gotten both of my knuckle bolts out, knock on wood.

When I did mine, one broke and one didn't. For the bolt that broke off in the knuckle, I thought about drilling it out and replacing with a longer bolt and nut too. But I took the knuckle to a local auto machine shop and let them remove the broken off bolt for $25, they even pulled out the rusted in ball joint for me! Getting the ball joint out of the other knuckle was a real pain.

Bummed that I didn't order off eBay. Lesson learned for next time I guess.

I ended up going RA as I already had my mind fixed for getting them. When CarID fell through I wasn't gonna reorder them, I just let the refund come back.

Mine wasn't that easy at all, heck I even heated it while it was still on the car, still broke. Guess I shouldn't sound too surprised, it is a Chicago car....

Mine was a Georgia then Virginia and now Ohio car so I'm gonna have my hands full when I do this and the Teins same time.

So... has anyone actually installed these yet? I am still saving up for swaybar endlinks, and cv axles.

Maybe next week I'll try and be brave. Need a spring compressor since I planed on knocking em both out.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well that ruined a perfectly nice saturday!

Things actually didn't turn out too badly, looks like someone did my ball joints not so long ago, so no pinch bolt issues, things came apart pretty easily with my electric impact.

I got everything bolted up apart from the ball joint back in, wouldn't budge.

I figured I would take it back off and inspect clearances. Turns out the ball joint supplied is about half a mil larger. Doesnt sound like much but when its already tight it makes a big difference.

I couldn't use my old ball joint as the boot had a crack, and it was already spitting watery oil when moving it, so I just ended up taking a little off with the dremel. Brought the new one within the same specs, and it was still a little tight going in but it did.

Now to the other side, might be time for a beer.....

Yeah... FDB! I'll let a shop tackle this in the spring. By then I'll find out if everyone had BJ size issues and swap em accordingly.
