PICS comparison of stock vs. Xtec 5K premium HID

I was able to meet bluechipbmw this past weekend. He showed me his excellent iON's with 18's P1 setup and I showed him my Xtec 5K premium HID's. We were able to find an empty lot to get some pics and note the differences. Here they are:

Stock on left, HID on right (his car is lowered almost 2"):

A couple of more pics me of me driving:

And one pic of the car and the NYC skyline:

All pics can be seen here:

And I also met with mudfoot and he got to see the HID's in person. I need to get a better camera to take better less grainy night pics.

The installation is real easy, and I followed the instructions on http://www.pimpmyauto.com This is the link for them http://www.pimpmyauto.com/H7%20HID%20kit%20install.htm

I will take some pics of the bulbs installed and post them, but the xtect kit matches everything so well that you are hard pressed to see anything out of the ordinary.

In all it took me around an hour to do the install, and that was diabling the DRL's and taking my time. Well worth the money if you like this sort of stuff.

Thanks guys for the compliments. Yes, the Xtec kit is a great product. I got it from this site. RPM has a special going on for LegacyGT.com members. I think it is a few dollars off than normal. Here is the link: http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17448

I highly recommend RPM and the product he has for sale.

And as for the last pic I really need to get me or rent a Digital SLR. My Powershot 400 is not good for pics like that. And I better hurry because that whole waterfront is under construction and pretty soon there will be no space to take a pic like that.

Awesome pics laz. I'm gonna order the Xtec 5000k's tomorrow based on your review/pics- along with some comparison shopping/research I've been doing. Your car looks sweet by the way (I sometimes wish I woulda got white rather than silver...sigh)

Your pic of the NYC skyline is awesome. I lived in Edgewater for about 4 years before moving out here to Mile High. I miss it...

Peace

Man it is bright! but i'm planning to get HID next month, because it's just plain pimp

Gotta love the glare coming from your botched HID retro. Please use HID based projectors if you use HID bulbs. Oncoming drivers will thank you.

Please read all the countless threads on this forum regarding the Legacy stock projectors and how they stack up to HID projectors. They are not perfect, but in no way are we talking halogen reflectors glare here. Also it is hard for you to judge glare from a picture, but the cutoff on the wall will certainly will tell you something about the cutoff. Yes you can never compare it to a OEM setup with self-leveling, but you can't call it botched either. Have not gotten flashed yet, and I had people that I know driving in front of me.

Well I do agree with you that its hard to use pictures to see actual output. However, in both your output shots you can see "ghosting" sitting a foot over your cut off line. To me that isn't acceptable. I just completed a retrofit for my ride and here are a few shots:

PeteNJ and All -

Objectively, yes, bulb-ballast-ignitor "improper," plug-and-play kits for the LGTs definitely will result in *some* oncoming glare. And yes, viewed up-close, thre is definitely a bit of light creep above the "normal" (as compared to stock incandescents) cut-off.

However, subjectively, on-the-road, this minimal glare seems to truly not offend oncoming traffic, and many - many - LGT members have attested to weeks, if not months, of driving with no flashes from oncoming vehicles, and some of the more considerate members even have had their friends drive their LGTs, while they tested this for themselves both in the rearview mirror of a pacing car up-front, or from oncoming lanes.

Basically, it leads to an "acceptable" level of glare, and probably not any more so than even slightly mis-aimed stock incandescents for our LGTs - which itself has been cited as a source of complaint (a search will bear this out, with the latest incidence barely over a week ago).

For true lighting enthusiasts - or otherwise purist who insists on having the best cutoff with absolutely minimal oncoming glare - of course, a full-out "proper" retrofit, including optics, is the only way to go, but it is by no means anywhere near as imperative as what is seen for many other applications. :)

For those seeking a middle-ground due to either expense or technical ability, an H7/D2S adaptor ring should make for an even better cut-off/glare-reduction than just a plug-and-play.

:)

For the record, PeteNJ, no, I'm not running any type of HID kit/retrofit with my LGT. This is one of the few vehicles I've driven/owned in the past decade for which I'm totally happy with the light output/pattern/throw, "even incandescent." :)

Thanks TSi+WRX I knew you would chip in. I think it also highly depends on where you live/play. I know in the streets on NYC you get more glare from the lamposts that abound all over the city, than from incoming cars with poorly aligned headlights. For now even though I was happy with my halogen lights I truly feel this is a compromise between usefulness and the *bling* factor. :icon_bigg

Like many have stated the OEM projectors are very good at keeping the light output consistent and with an acceptable cutoff. I have also read many pages of information regarding HID's and proper retrofits, but at the moment this I believe for me is the better compromise. This is not to say that a proper HID retrofit may not happen down the line, but for now this is acceptable. Getting back to the main reason for this post, it was to show members how the light output of a HID kit and OEM lights compare, not was it ever meant to be a kit vs. retrofit HID projectors comparison as NJPete made it out to be. I am well aware of the advantages and disavantages of both, and I believe this is a good middle ground for now.

I too have a 5000K Xtec from RPM! What amuses me with this glare issue is that most if not all look at the headlights right in front of the car. I think the more proper way to test if you have glare is to look at the headlights where the opposite traffic is coming from, i.e. the other side of the road. I have tried this and do not see anything offending from my headlights.
