wiring diagram for headlights

I would like to wire up some additional lights in my LGT, and have a dual position dual pole switch to have them off, on, or tied in to the high beams. I am looking for a wiring diagram of the headlights so that I know where to tie in to the high beams. Does anyone know where I could find that?

 

The lights in question are these, and they will be mounted behind my grill.

Can someone idiot-check me? I'm trying to find where to tie some lights in so that when I turn my high beams on these lights go on as well. I've got no clue how to read wiring diagrams so I'm kind of floundering here. If I tie in to the red wire on #16 on the B360 connector, that should work right? Do I go for it there or where that red wire goes into B96? Or should I go for the #3 wire on the F7 connector? The #15 wire on the F109 connector seems like it's in that line as well, but which one will give me the desired result?

 

To re-iterate, i've got some LED lights that I want to turn on anytime I flick my high beams on. I've got a switch that i'm wiring these up to, and one of the positions will be this, tied in to the high beams. Another position will just be the lights on by themselves and then another position to have them off.

 

Side question, I'm assuming that the letters indicate the color of the wire, R being red, RG meaning red green etc.

Yes, but I believe that's a switched ground, not a positive.

Depends on where you want to make the connection. Shouldn't matter electrically. I think B96 is going to be inside the cabin, so that might be your best bet if you're wiring a switch. Your switch will need to be a SPDT with a center off. A couple small LEDs should be fine, but if you're doing anything with decent power I'd use a relay too.

Yes, you have a switched ground, the feed is on the common part from the main fuse box.

 

What you can do is to put a relay in parallel with the main beam filament. One wire from pin 2 and one wire from pin 3 at one of the headlights to each side of a coil in a relay. And you have to disable the DRL if you have that enabled.

 

Insert a switch somewhere along the path.

Yes I would take it from the headlights - or at least both the wires at a location where they are common, you need to go from both sides of the headlight filament to get the correct behavior. If I remember correctly there's also a relay feeding MB-16 on the main fuse box that pulls when lights goes on (different model years have had different solutions here, so I may be wrong) and therefore you need to put it like the following:

 

"F7 Pin3" to "Switch pin 1"

"Switch pin 2" to "Relay coil pin 1"

"Relay coil pin 2" to "F7 Pin 2"

"Switch lamp ground" to "F7 Pin 2"

For rocker switch I have been using switches similar to this one:

They are easy to mount - just a 20mm wood drill to make hole in the plastic and some minor trimming with a box cutter. I can come back with pics about how I have done it in my 5th gen. Rectangular switches are a bit harder to fit without a lot of patience and good tools unless there's a spare location available.

I also ended up buying this rocker switch in an ON-OFF-ON format, SPDT with independent LED lights, V6D2UHNB model. I'll be wiring it up so that the words are on a red LED all the time and whenever I switch the lights on (either position) the symbol will light up.

From a conversation I had with another friend over g-chat:

 

R2 on F7

that looks like the high

find the high beam relay

back in the panel

that should be the same leg

 

so you will route power through the switch to the activation coil of the relay

either give it always on power or high-beam on power

Met up with Jeremy yesterday and he probed all over. Going the wire that trips the high beams, it's negative. It's the red/white being pointed at here. Also we came up with a wiring diagram that should work wonderfully. All I'm waiting on now is my switch to come in then we can start wiring!

Well here's the wiring diagram we started with, and we ended up adding an additional relay so that the lights would be off occasionally. We have to add one more relay to have the full functionality I want but other than that they are working and very bright!

The third relay was added because we didn't fully monitor how our tie to the high beam circuit worked.

 

The wire acts in this behavior:

 

Headlights | high beams | output

Off Off. 0

Off On. 0

On. Off. 12V

On. On. 0

 

We thought that it outputted 12V at all times when the high beams were off, however that 12V is only active when the headlights are turned on. We figured this out after the relays were all wired. So when the headlights were off the circuit was no longer supplied that 12V we relied on to keep the lights off so the acc lights remained on all the time.

 

The third relay ran off of the headlights to disable to power delivery relay when the headlights were not on to keep the lights off while the headlights were not turned on (and therefore not supplying 12 volts to the relay to keep the lights off).

 

If I had known that 12V was not supplied while the headlights were off id have designed the circuit differently.
