Stromung Catback vs. HKS Silent Power

I have my own opinion on the two exhausts as I just put my Stromung back on today...I have a dyno tune tomorrow, and I the Stromung by butt dyno tells me it has better flow...By the tape measure, the Stromung is 1/4" in diameter bigger too (3" vs 2.75" at the midpipe). Test driving right after seemed a little more spirited as if the exhaust flow "is" free-er,...better throttle response and a lot noisier,..but racier too...I likee...Im sure I will get more attention and frustrated soon though by this,...but that is what this exhaust is made for...

By looks though, the HKS is the bomb! Chrome pieces, nicer welds, tags and serial numbers on them, and lighter in weight overall....Sound is a little too soft for me, but does what its supposed to do...Also, by lugging the different parts around, the HKS pieces are lighter, expecially each muffler as the dual tip Stromungs are heavier....about 5lbs more it seems. The single hugh tip looks more JDMish too...Funny though,...we had some heavy rains recently and 1 of the HKS mufflers had a little water trapped in the baffles...

Pics are of the HKS I took today...

Sorry I have no HKS video or sound clips...Best is the one off YouTube:

But from the inside, it is very subdued,..you can actually carry a conversation,...:)

I was thinking the same thing. I've had my stromung for two years and while its great and gets lots of compliments on the sound, its not very aggressive looking. I have been thinking about switching to the HKS, but also fabing up something similar in looks to the HKS out of magnaflow tube mufflers.

Sorry but no,

The Stromung does not bolt up to the stock exhaust or Perrin at the midpipe or at the Y-Split. Neither can you bolt the oem muffler to the Stromung...

One idea if I would like to get a free flowing HKS exhaust would be maybe to clean out the baffles in the midpipe....Just like how people do this for the Uppipe,..Is this possible to retain the look of it but being free flow? Is there a long routing bit for this and is this possible?

Will the stromung cans bolt up to the stock y? I'm really digging those dual tips.

Thanks for the write up and pictures/sound clips, very helpful.

Here is the Stromung DP they offered, it was a shorty DWG style: http://www.boxer4racing.com/exhaustGT.htm#Exhaust%20Down%20Pipe

They still list the stromung catback for the LGT as well on the Boxer4Racing site. Those of you looking for one may want to email Dale there to check the stock of those.

I had a Stromung exhaust (and Stromung mid + HFC pipe) on my 99' Forester and can attest to the quality of these parts. Great build, finish, fit, and sound.

Quick sound clips of the stromung pipes (plus a borla UEL replica header):

Stromungs tips look so BMW-ish,...really classy and with the polished cans to boot!

The HKS look really JDM or almost ricer with the 4" tip it seems...

But the build quality and savings in weight is a plus....too bad HKS does not have the HI Power for the Legacy and just the Silent Power that has the resonator..

I think without the resonator would clean things up and more flow...As is now,..the Silent power restricts the flow and power...(by my butt dyno) :)

The tips I have on mine aren't the standard tips that stromung offers for legacy either. I had them use the double wall resonated tips like the ones I had on the wrx. I like the thicker beveled edges on them.

I'm working on making cutouts for the OBXT bumper so I can raise them up properly. We'll see how that turns out. I dont have the money right now to afford a new setup, even if I do sell this one!
