a2cpc
I am getting real close to ordering my LGT, is the short shifter worth it? I have a WRX now and have always thought it to be a bit long to shift. Any thoughts or troubles?
chenc544
Yes. IMHO, it should be your very first mod.
hutru01
Get the Cobb STS...its cheaper than the STI shifter and its shorter
chenc544
I had just assume you mean an aftermarket STS. Yeah, skip the STI STS from the factory. Get the Cobb or Kartboy STS. Kartboy is cheaper but it's not adjustable.
IB6UB9
How difficult is it to install the short shifters?
chenc544
About 30-45 min job for just the shifter IIRC. http://www.legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16708&highlight=shifter The bushing is a bit of PITA but it's not hard, just frustrating. IB6UB9
What is the purpose of changing the front and rear bushings??? What does a bushing do??
itsme
I would recommend not changing the bushings. I installed the rear kartboy bushings when I install my kartboy sts. it made it very hard to shift and made the tranny hum. Trannies are no suppose to hum. That's bad . Just try the shifter first and see how it feels. Do forget after you install the shifter that it does'nt hit the shifter opening. You might have to file it. You will just need to get the tool to remove the c-clip at the base of the shifter. chenc544
The bushings remove some of the "slop" from shifting. Theoretically it should allow for more precise shifting. But the harder bushing also increases NVH that stock bushing helps filter out. I would also suggest that you try the STS without the bushings first. If you like the way it feels then leave the bushings off.
chenc544
it made it very hard to shift and made the tranny hum. I think you might have tighten the nut on the bushing too much. IIRC, the spec is only like 13 ft-lbs.
a2cpc
So the Subaru Short shifter isn't any good? I heard that the others weren't true short shifters, but just changed the pivot point. If so, wouldn't the Subaru one be better, even if it is a little longer shift? Since it is a factory install, isn't it coverd by the waranty? hutru01
The STI shifter is ok, its a little shorter than stock, but by no means is it a "true" short shifter (compared to the Cobb or Kartboy) I thought about cutting mine actually....

The length of the shifter is only part of the equation for shorter throw. Ideally you actually want to keep as much of the shifter length as possible for leverage. A properly designed STS will combine shorter shifter length with repositioned pivot point. The point is to be able to shift in and out of the gears faster, not to simply have a shorter shifter stock. hutru01
^ Its all personal preference I prefer a weighted short throw, where as someone else might like a lighter throw
chenc544
So going by this, wouldn't the STi STS be better? Maybe, but the STI STS ~$250 and Kartboy is $100. Is the STI $150 better than the Kartboy? Most people would say no.

hutru01
^ no troubles, I just want a "shorter shifter" It was 250 added on to my sticker price....I would have much rather payed 100 for a kartboy and have a shorter throw
