RedlineGoods Modified Steering Wheel

BAC5.2

Recommended Posts

One thing that's always bothered me about my 4th gen, is the steering wheel. It's not particularly comfortable, and there is a ton of room for improvement.

I was looking on YouTube about how to recover a wheel, and thought about giving it a try. I bought a spare, and was thinking about going for it when Maciek at RedlineGoods started posting about wheel wraps. Seemed as good a time as any, so I shot them an email.

I shipped my wheel, and waited. Product development takes a little time, but the suspense was killing me. It wasn't going to be a simple wrap, but rather wrap AND add thickness to the rim. That was the task, and they were set.

A few weeks later, I get a cheery e-mail from the guys at RLG saying my wheel had shipped. I picked it up yesterday:

They clearly took more time packaging it than I did when I sent it to them (in little more than a box with no padding).

Finally:

For the install, you can follow Paul's guide here:

http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/damd-steering-wheel-install-guide-183313.html?t=183313&highlight=damd+install

It was fairly simple, though my stock wheel was REALLY tightly on the spline. BIG hint that Paul doesn't mention: LEAVE THE NUT ON THE SPLINED SHAFT OR YOU WILL HIT YOURSELF IN THE FACE!!!!

Fortunately, this isn't the first time I've done a wheel install, so I didn't have to learn that one the hard way.

The install is quick, it almost took more time to unpack the wheel from the box as it did to do the install.

I haven't driven the car yet, but the wheel is substantially thicker and quite a bit softer than the stock one. It feels amazing.

I went with black leather and black thread, but you know RLG and they will use whatever color or material you want. I was tempted to go with Alcantara, but decided leather would be more durable for a daily driver that sees a lot of miles.

Behold:

Ignore the car being dirty, it's been sitting at TurboXS for the past 2 weeks. I was too excited to do the wheel install to wait to pick it up.

I'll get some comparison measurements tonight when I pick the car up, as well as some driving impressions.

I must say, this is a GREAT alternative to dumping lots of coin on a DAMD wheel. It's a bit soft feeling, but I have a feeling it'll be perfect.

I'll get better pics tomorrow. I got to drive with it today and it is INCREDIBLE.

I have my stock wheel for sale, if anyone wants a spare to send in!

Mine was the prototype, so I'm not sure how my price reflects actual pricing. I'm going to defer the cost question directly to RLG.

Hi guys

you can buy the wheel wrap from us for $109 here: http://www.redlinegoods.com/Legacy05leatherwheelcover.php

Padding is $39 extra.

And you really don't need spares if you can live for a week without your car - we have installers in the US, you send them your wheel removed from the car and the wrap we will have sent you and they will install it for you within 48 hours and send it back. If you choose to overnight it both ways it's only 4 days...

Installation is approx $80-$120 depending on stitching style chosen and other options (with padding it's likely to be $100-$120).

Have a great day,

Maciek

I've put a few hundred miles on the wheel since I installed it.

I have so many "favorite" mods, but this is easily one of them. The padding is worth every bit. You'll regret not getting the padding.

If the 07-09 guys want to start a traveling wheel, I've got my stock wheel. $100 shipped for it.

Looks great. I wanted a thicker wheel, but don't like the DAMD price tag either. This looks like a much more feasible option...and looks WAY better than the other covers (wheelskins, etc.). My only concern is the thickness of the leather on the spokes...looks like it pushes outward on the radio button panel a bit causing some misalignment. Or is that just the pic?

very nice

@ maciek: So you can DIY install this cover yourself? If not where can i send my spare wheel to to get covered? Im living in Ireland though!

This is the wheel in mine, standard momo wheel on RHD legacy:

It doesn't. If you look at the pic of the plain wheel, you'll see that the padding stops. That little hairline gap was there on my stock wheel as well. This thing fits as if it were OEM.
