stevenva
When my starter started going, it would just "click" and not crank. That single "click" was the solenoid plunger doing it's thing, but the copper contacts inside had worn out, not contacting properly. They usually last for about 100,000 miles. Pic1= Remove starter. Remove end cover from solenoid and plunger will just tip out. Pic2= Solenoid plunger before. Pic3= After wire brushing solenoid contact ring. Do not use a file. It's just copper. Pic4= New contacts seen here. Pic5= New ones in place. Pic6= Old contacts. Note the wear, prohibiting complete contact for the circuit to be made. Pic7= Solenoid piggy-backs on starter. Reconnect positive output from solenoid to starter motor. Pic8= Plunger (with spring) about to go in. Pic9= Replace solenoid cover. You are now good for another 100,000 miles. LegacyLove88
Does anyone happen to know where I could find the copper contacts? I've tried the subaru parts store online, but they only have the starter on there. Or what the part numbers are for them? Thanks in advance! stevenva
What I did was google for places that rebuild starters and alternators. I found a place not too far away called Dr. Cranknstart. I went to their shop, told them what I was doing and they handed me the 2 contacts. I asked how much and they said $10 was fair. jhawk222
Since it has gotten cold I've noticed this problem. Great write up......seems easy enough.
TexasLegacy2.5GT
This is a great write up. I think I just want to try to do this because the car is 13 years old and it's never been done. Thanks!
nmykytyn
Thanks for the write up and photos, just did my wife's 2001 Legacy wagon 2.0. Just a note to others the bottom bolt is a stud with a nut and a PIA to get to. Best done from underneath. Oh almost forgot, contacts were a whopping $2.00 at the local ignition shack. ACraig
Old post, but I'll bump it up as it saved me spending $150 on a new 'rebuilt' starter. Wasn't able to find a place to buy new contacts on a sunday, but I cleaned them all off thoroughly and made sure they were lined up well and now the car starts like there's a new motor in there! Cheers!
