Pics of LED turn signals and Hella yellow fogs

Got my new bulbs in today and put them all in. There are some functionality issues with the LED 3157 bulbs, but I did get them to work properly with some work. I'll get to that part later.

No lights, lenses are completely clear :D :

Turn signals flashing on high:

First off, the turn signals look great. Brighter, and although the last pic doesn't show it well, the color is very amber. Because of the design of the LED bulb, it fully lights up the reflector unlike many LED replacement bulbs. However, I discovered a little idiosyncrasy with our turn signal wiring.

Here is a diagram of a standard 3157 bulb:

This is how the LED bulbs I bought came configured. Unfortunately, the actual wiring in the car is an alternate wiring scheme for 3157 bulbs. It look like this:

What ends up happening is that when you put the bulbs in one way, only the high setting will work. If reverse it in the socket 180*, only the low setting will work. I ended up bending the prong for the low setting across the base, and solding in a new lead to contact the correct section of the socket. I also soldered the two ground prongs together. Sorry, no pics of this, but you can imagine what would need to be done from the above diagrams. It took some work to get it all together and get the reworked bases to fit into the sockets. If you guys want LED bulbs, I highly suggest that you request the proper wiring from the bulb manufacturer.

The fogs look ok. I'd have liked more yellow, but I think they look good. I used Hella yellow star bulbs from rallylights.com. I chose a slightly overwattage bulb (85w) in the hopes of more light output, while not risking wiring harnesses and housings.

The turn signals now flash twice as fast as normal due to the lack of resistance across the LED bulb. That can be fixed, but I actually kind of like it the way it is now.

Hey guys. I got the bulbs off Ebay. They are really nice and a great design for an incandescent replacement bulb. Here is a link to the auction and seller: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7970509053&category=33713. Be aware of the the mods needed to make the bulbs work properly. Here is a diagram of the bending/soldering requried:

You may be able to request that the bulbs be wired to our configuration from the seller. Mind you, the wiring differences are apparent only with LED bulbs, which seem to be polarity sensative. Regular incandescent 3157 bulbs work fine.

One each for the front turn signals. So just two total. The mirrors are already LED's so there is absolutely no point to replacing anything there. You could also replace the rear turn signal bulbs with LED replacement bulbs, but I chose not to.

Well, do you guys know what bulb number the various fixtures in the tail lights need?

If someone where to check out the e-bay link to the LED vendor, you should be able to find out if they have dual-brightness red LED arrays to fit the bulb-holders.

As for the visual effect, it would probably work much like the turn indicators in the first post. Quite well, and much better than the two dimensional bulb replacements that don't use the reflectors.

It would be interesting to see how the response would change. LEDs are solid state, and are, for all intents and purposes, instant on, and instant off. That, long life, vibration resistance, low heat, current, and mounting depth demands make it a natural source for automotive DC lighting. They are now getting the brightness out of the arrays to make them truly viable. I am wondering why they are so slow in coming to most of the automotive market.

I would buy and try them if I had a legacy. My current vehicles all have fluted lense tail lights. (waves and facets in the lense, can't directly see the bulbs. Legacies have faceted reflectors, and very little fluting in the lens. Makes a bigger difference, visually to have LEDs in there. Maybe the next time the bulbs burn out, I'll look into those LED replacements then.

I would be interested to hear about a legacy owner who would try putting these cylindrical LEDs in their tail lights.

It would be nice to have a listing of the tail assembly bulb number index, or a complete exterior bulb index, to see if there are any other bulbs that can be converted to LEDs, or if the reverse lights can be swapped for halogen units. Maybe an exterior lighting reference thread aside from HID low beam replacements

As a flashaholic (flashlight hobbyist - yes, I'm THAT dorky! :p ), I keep wanting to rig a couple of my SureFire L6s or some of these:

Interesting grille....Our Gt's come with only the centre chrome bit and badge downunder. Not the complete surround perimeter like yours.

Personally I think yours looks better and more class.

Rob.

Funny you should say that, because seemingly everyone in the US is swapping their's out for a JDM type grill. I did. Pics here: http://www.legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13218
