PeterJMC's 2008 Spec B

Recommended Posts

I purchased my 2008 Legacy GT spec.B in September 2015 with 71,800 miles. The car color is Quartz Silver Metallic (QSM).

This is my second Subaru Legacy. My first was a 5 speed 2006 Legacy GT in Satin White Pearl with Taupe interior. I traded that car in for a Prius Five Hatchback in December of 2010 and now I'm back!

This car has been with two owners prior to me and I am the third owner of this vehicle.

Second owner: CT08Spec.B - here is his build thread and here is the sales thread

First owner: Chris - Founder of EFI Logics (R.I.P) For Sale thread is here on NASIOC

The car is home! We got home at around 10pm last night. I'll have to take pictures when I get home after work.

Here is one during one of the handful of re-fuelings on the way home... This definitely doesn't sip gas like a Prius.

@ 72,255 miles I did all this:

  • Clear vinyl wrapped front plate
  • Installed a GrimmSpeed License Plate Relocation Kit
  • Installed a plate frame on the rear

First MOD done! I just did the pretty basic thing of putting the front and rear license plates on the car. Obviously, this isn't really anything exciting. Maryland requires both front and rear license plates to be displayed.

Clear vinyl wrapped front plate

I clear vinyl wrapped the front plate to help prevent surface pitting due to impacts from road debris and to also aid in the ease of cleaning off bug guts!

I'm pretty sure that I could technically be cited a repair order from Maryland because I "technically" have something covering the front plate. I've been cited a handful of times for having clear bubble covers over a plate even though the covers didn't distort the plates image at all.
Ohh well.

The installation was pretty straight forward, if you've done vinyl wrapping before. You will absolutely need a heat gun to properly shape the vinyl to conform and stretch around the raised lettering. If you plan on doing this and its your first time, I'd recommend paying a shop to do this or buying a couple of sheets in case you mess up.

You can't tell it's wrapped unless you are 1 foot away and really looking for something.

GrimmSpeed License Plate Relocation Kit P/N: 094011

I decided to go with the GrimmSpeed License Plate Relocation Kit because it provided a very clean no drill solution to mount a front plate to the car. The bumper had no holes in it and I wanted to keep it that way.

The installation was super easy and wasn't any different from the generic installation instructions they have hosted online
. You have the ability to position and angle the front plate in just about any manner you wish to. The finished mounting position that I settled with is at a slight angle that follows the curve of the front bumper.

To finish this up, I'd like to drill a hole in the tow hook cover to clean up the overall install. I'll complete that some other time.

Unboxed!

Installed a plate frame on the rear

I picked up a plate frame for the rear that doesn't cover any of the plate and does provide a simple and thin border around the perimeter. I also picked up a mounting and hardware cover kit. With everything tightened down, the mounting kit keeps the the plate slightly raised off the deck lid. It's a nice no rattle install with the bolt heads covered
:D

I did this with both my LGT and Spec B and it definitely looks a lot better than not having the cover there.

Welcome back!!

Thanks, Nolmers! It's good to be back and is taking a bit to get used to, but in a good way.

I did this with both my LGT and Spec B and it definitely looks a lot better than not having the cover there.

Any tips on drilling the hole right the first time? I was thinking about using a laser to maintain the marked area.

VA has the same laws and I hated the front plate. Being in Ohio now with VA plates the front is gone. Haven't done anything to the holes yet.

...

Does Ohio require front plates that you might have to eventually get if you switch your registration? :)

The VA registration has my Ohio address so they didn't seem to care. Being so far away they don't enforce VA plate laws nor emissions but I still have a cat in the down pipe. Va for cars not garaged in Va only need to be insured to renew. I only have to do safety when I get back to that area with my car. Usually Tyson's corner or somewhere near.

If only,,,,,I had a stealthy grille on mine,,,,

It's the only shortcoming I have,,,,but driving one of these types are something that may appear transient for the moment but on long trips those moments accumulate and as has been said they are incredibly fun to drive.....regardless of their age....

@ 72,255 miles I took it to AndrewTech Automotive and they did all this in the past two days:

  • Performed Multi-point Inspection
  • Performed Compression and Leakdown Test
  • Removed Tint
  • Took the car to a Maryland (MD) Vehicle Inspection Station

After looking at reviews on a few shops in the area, I decided to take it to AndrewTech Automotive to look over the car and make sure it's ready to pass MD state inspection.

Before I even got to the shop the car threw a Check Engine Light (CEL) with a code P0172 - System too rich bank 1. Vacuum hoses checked out OKAY. The IAT needed some TLC. I cleaned it up, cleared the codes and logged some miles on the car before heading in to make sure the car was good to go.

Performed Multi-point Inspection

Everything checked out good. A few things noted were that the the following items needed to be replaced soon battery, oil, and accessory belt.

Performed Compression and Leakdown Test

  • Compression Test

  • Cylinder 1 = 130

  • Cylinder 2 = 130

  • Cylinder 3 = 130

  • Cylinder 4 = 130

    Leakdown Results:

  • Cylinder 1 - 5%

  • Cylinder 2 - 4%

  • Cylinder 3 - 5%

  • Cylinder 4 - 5%

Removed Tint

Car was purchased with 20% tint all around which would not pass inspection. AndrewTech took the car to a local shop, Cutting Edge Tint, to do the work. The tint was pulled off and I'm looking at some brands to put back on.

Took the car to a Maryland (MD) Vehicle Inspection Station

AndrewTech also took the car to a local shop that is licensed to perform state inspections. The car passed MD inspection with only one minor correction needed. The center brake light was missing a bulb. Bulb was installed the car is now street legal!

So now it's time for the MODs to begin? :spin:
