Szus
Hello. everybody. i own 98 legacy gt wagon. @ 250,000km she's got some mileage. she was fine till i thought it would be okay to let my son take out the leggy today. He came back with a full tank of gas. Odd i figured. so i start it up to go pick up some milk and oh there it is. lifters are a clicking away. he must of given it hell out there. theres really no way to fix that besides replacing them is there? then again they are probably original so would they be due for a change anyways? There's a sound which sounds like crunching snow, or a creaky chair when rolling to a stop. coming from the front of the car. it slows with wheel speed so its something around there. (been around for a while) ___________________________________________________________ My wife owns a 98 outback @ 350,000km(mostly highway). runs strong. weird sound starting at 4500 rpm. sounds like a turbo spooling. someone had suggested timing belt idle pulley bearings. Looking for a second opinion on that. ____________________________________________________________ There were some other things i refer to as birth defects as its happened in both vehicles, ill get to that later tho. Sorry for the large amount of crap i unloaded there. First post. hope to be a helpful contributor.
I Donated broknindarkagain Posted October 3, 2011 I Donated Share Posted October 3, 2011 Sounds like you need to adjust the valve clearance on the 98 GT wagon. Its done by shims that you can buy at the dealer for about $3 a piece. The 98 Outback sounds like it can be the power steering pump, tenerioner pulley, alternator, a timing pulley, a torque converter, or a wheel bearing. Kind of hard to tell without hearing it for myself -broknindarkagain My Current Project - Click Here COME AND TAKE IT "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." johnegg
of course, it could be the lifters, but i would make sure that's what it is. i would think that lifters in need of adjusting would develop slowly, not suddenly, but i don't really know. and the usually wear for the exhaust valves is to get tighter over time. will that make them tick? (the 98 GT has bucket and shim lifters.) left unadjusted you can get a burnt exhaust valve. they should be adjusted / checked every timing belt change (105k miles). but not very many of us do it . when was the timing belt last done? the tensioners can make a ''knocking'' noise when they get old and are about to fail. the ''knock'', as it is described by drivers, is sometimes mistaken for rod knock. 250k kM or 250k miles? i would get a mechanics stethoscope , <$5 at habor freight, and try to isolate the noise. the money you spend on ''knowing'' where the sound is coming from is going to be well worth it. adjusting the ''bucket and shim lifters is a pain in the ass. but if it has not been done, it probably should be even if it is not the cause of the ''tick''. Frogg
My wife owns a 98 outback @ 350,000km(mostly highway). runs strong. weird sound starting at 4500 rpm. sounds like a turbo spooling.. my car does the same thing, except starting around 3500rpm. It ticks like a mofo too. Runs strong, but sounds angry

xt2005bonbon
reviving an old thread. What's the sound of noisy lifters? Is it just a noticeably louder subie ticking? Performance issues? Some drama happened to me a couple weeks ago (sheared off timing belt tensioner while driving). Car still runs great but the ticking is a bit louder and it changes to some random 'tack tack' when cold/under load/below 2000rpms.
