this week i had the pleasure of working on a fellow LGT forum members car :) and here are the results

This install is what i like to call a class one custom install :) in other words, its simple, clean, with a focus on sounding quality, versus more flashy installs i have done. its about the most basic custom install i will ever do.

The goals are to created a low key system that can be easily hidden while maintaining great sound quality.

first is the headunit, the AVO part was used of course:

A kenwood 689 headunit was chosen for its stealthy appearance when the unit is off. normally, the dmask feature is of little use becuase when it sits where hte stereo is suppose to be, it doesnt really fool thieves into anyhting except knowing that its a kenwood unit :) BUT, with the unique location of the subaru, i feel like it can really be a stealthy feature:

here is what i mean, here you see the unit off, the plastic face palte blends well with the factory cubby location and looks almost stock:

and here is the unit open and operational:

moving onto the front stage, a set lf DLS ultimate UR6s 6.5" component set resides in suede trimmed fiberglass kicks. After experimenting with different angles, i found that this semi off axis angle works really well in creating a solid and stable image and sound stage, waht really is nice is the depth of the sound stage created by this type of kicks :) THe suede is chose to blend very well with the interior and adds a touch of class:

the bass control for the elemental amp i hid in the stock fuse panel, so its easy access for hte driver at any given time

moving on to the trunk...the main goal was to create a stealthy apperance with some flash when needed. The customer supplied a rather deep sub in the eclipse titantium 12, so the floor was raised about 2.75" to accomodate it and the big amps needed to power it :)

here is the floor with everyhting covered, stealthy, and very sturdy (solid 1/2" MDF for the floor with 8 support points), and a cargo mat can go over the install to created a totally stealth trunk:

now here are the good with the covers off, a nine.1 powers the titaium 12, and a nine.2x powers the front stage, the sub sits in its own suede lined well, all covers are breathable to allow air flow :) I also removed the metal plate that is on the rear deck as well as a few other pieces of covering to allow more air intothe cabin.

would work fine, i can even go more off axis, or eat up the space behind the factory kick a little...not a problem honestly...the least amount of space i can take up with kicks and DLS would be a bout half way into the dead pedal :)

the customer sat in my car before and felt the kicks were fine, and these take up about an inch less room...eitherw ay, people get used to them in no time :)

Nice work Bing! What did you use to fab up those interior pieces in the cubby? I'm thinking about fabing some interior pieces and those materials look just like factory materials.

First of all...I would like to thank Bing for a GREAT JOB on Isis (my wife's name for the car). It came out better than I could have imagined.

I pretty much gave Bing the freedom to do whatever he wanted...and needless to say...I am very pleased. The install is clean and simple...just the way I wanted it, and it sounds AWESOME.

For those concerned about the kicks...there is plenty of room. I was a little worried about it at first too...but it's fine.

From the time I contacted Bing...from start to finish...he was helpful and very professional.

And how many people would do this? The original deck I gave him for the install didn't fit...so he went down to the store and bought the new one for me...with his money! Who does that?

Anyway...amazing job Bing! I really couldn't be happier. For those in the Bay (or not)...make sure to contact him. DO IT! DO IT NOW!

I'll come back to gloat some more later. :icon_chee :icon_chee

Do you find that this help the sound at all?

whether this helped mcuh, i dont know, but int he past, when i have done similar installs, i by a rule of thumb try to find as many openings as i can through the rear deck. on cars with rear deck speakers, i remove them (rear deck is a horrible place for speakers in an aftermarket system) and leave the grille in place to be used as a port, in cars with out rear deck speakers like the LGT, i basically try to find some kind of ports through the metal. the next level up would be physically porting the carpeted board to gain direct access. carpeted board is always more permiable (SP) than metal :)

thanks mark! you have been a great customer as well :) easy to deal with and its always a pleasure to deal with peeps such as you :) enjoy it :) as i always say a good system makes the drive so much more enjoyable

p.s. sorry for all the typos, a habit i had from college: type fast, use spell check later, but dont have spell check any more lol (can you believe that both my under and masters degrees involve tons of writing?)

anyway, hopefully my point went through clearly, i tend to get very lazy after a hard days work on a car :)

i have personally driven around with out a spare for 10 years, can of fixaflat and a AAA card FTW! :)

i always say if you are driving locally AAA and fix a flat is all you need, fi you plan to venture out further, you can always throw the spare in the trunk, it would still take up less room than a huge box and amp rack in the trunk :)

Looks awesome!!!

What other decks might fit in with the AVO half-DIN? Also, is there a part number on the AVO piece?

Wonder if the wife will ........?

Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!
