Lou's Custom Exhaust

SUPERBU

Recommended Posts

I stopped by Lou's yesterday because my cat back looks like it just came off of the Titanic. The flanges are crumbling, the bolts have disolved and it's ready to fail.

The service was great. They are friendly, flexible, and offer good prices. He quoted me under $150 for new plumbing installed that would re-use the stock mufflers.

He also made a suggestion that has me thinking. :spin: If there is room... How about installing a single muffler by the resonator and split into 2 tail pipes that reach the bumper. The bumper cutouts would still have tips and it would have a little more rumble. He has a low profile performance muffler instead of the huge stock GT cans.

Thoughts?

someone here has a 3rd muffler flow through that replaces the resonator. so yes it is possible if you replace the resonator.... IMO may look weird w/out muffler in the back, I saw pics of one w/ straight pipes and just 2 pipes in the back in stock location, looks weird cause you can see the pipes and they curve up from the rear diff

That's what I'm worried about. ^^ I can add some nice tips to fill the pockets but you will be able to see the pipes.

I looked around but couldn't find pics of other GT's with this set-up.

Nice thanks man!

I was driving my wife's OB home tonight and she was in front of me driving the GT. I have to say it's hard to beat a nice pair of cans.

I do like the look of the dual mufflers. Hmmm.

gut the stockers and put a straight pipe, or half gut them, thats what someone did. if you look the pipe enters one side and exits the other, and if you open to see, its 2 separate pipes

or if you get tips big enough it shouldnt matter that much...:iam:

I would advise against a crush bent exhaust. You will lose low end torque at part throttle - yes, this will be noticeable. It can't be that hard to find a used stock exhaust....

I would just hold out be patient. I picked up my full turbo back for $450. All local pickup.

And I love it. Although the driver side exhaust tip sticks out a touch more and hangs a touch lower. And have yet to figure out why. And no it is not a hanger issue. The can has no further room to go up.

Crush bent pipes are pipes that they literally crush the pipe on a bend. Where a straight section is circular and lets say 3" a bent section will be ovalish and let's say 2.75". Is causes restrictions in the exhaust. Find someone that can mandrel bend piping. You will pay more for it but it keeps the piping one uniform diameter. Good luck finding someone that can though. They are out there. But there aren't many.

Now what do you guys mean by "crush and bent?"

The term is "crush bend", as described above. What I don't like about them in particular is that in normal, part throttle accelleration, they make the car feel more laggy and slower.

IMHO, at low exhaust flows (part throttle) through the stock exhaust, the flow mostly laminar (straight) and low resistance (pressure drop). Adding crush bends causes turbulance (tumbling) in the flow which increases resistance (higher pressure drop). At full throttle, there is not much difference because it's all turbulant flow anyway.

I didn't know there was that much science to exhaust work. I assumed they all have a similar machine where they set the angle, bend the pipe, and it's done.

Interesting. They may explain why aftermarket CBE are pricey.
