lossol
I had a 98 and it did this if you didnt give it time to spin down. like 2-3 seconds. Then it would take. VBG1 gauges available at www.gtboostgauge.com
Elliottlj
what do you mean by spin down?
lossol
I'm not a transmission expert but when you engague the clutch I think the transmission side has some momentum and these gears are dont stop immediatly. So you have to give them a chance to spin down. All the forward gears are sycromeshed, but not in reverse. bmorrisj
also after you come to a stop you can put the car in first (or just push against the syncros) then stick it in reverse

gianspi
My 97 Impreza does this, too. I stop, put it in first, and immediately put it in reverse. Works like a charm and doesn't grind. enough zip ties and duct tape will fix anything.

edkwon
I think its a 5 MT quirk, both my 99 Impreza RS and 03 WRX had the stupid grind when you engage in reverse. Like other ppl said, i usually threw it into 1st, then R and this solved the problem. The 6MT box doesn't do this.
