glowing up pipe

2006 Legacy GT 2.5

 

on the way home car suddenly lost power like crazy so i pulled into a parking lot and popped the hood, figured a vac line or nothing since no CEL, checked around, nothing visible, then i go around to the passenger side and i look down and it a little gap in the heat shield i can see the up pipe is GLOWING, a bright cherry red. I just bought the car but in jersey if it has more than 60000 miles they don't need to cover anything. i have a warrantee but it doesn't cover exhaust components. Does the 06 have a cat in the Up Pipe? i have read that it does and that it doesn't so can anyone confirm if it does

do you think i can get the dealer to fix that since i just bought the car....they gave me no warrantee but they guaranteed it to pass inspection

Did it pass inspection?

 

If yes, then they aren't going to help.

 

A catless uppipe is cheap, and a shop wont charge TOO much to install.

catalyst fall under the 8/80k federal emissions standards. they have to be covered by the manufacturer. no matter if your the 1 millionth owner. under 8 years/80k miles they have to replace it. call your local dealer.

i wasn't sure if that covered every body if you had to buy it, if thats the case i fall under the 8/80k

Talked to the service guy at my dealer. He told me that a glowing up pipe could be something else wrong, but I said to him im like 90 percent sure its the cat, if it isn't that's when my other warranted kicks in but im pretty sure the cat is all clogged, I've never seen one glow that wasn't bad. The only problem is he can't get me in till next Thursday....so now I can't drive it....which means I have to take my camaro to work which has its own set of issues....including no a/c....and its frigging hot lol

I could see the up pipe potentially glowing if you were driving the car at full boost for a couple minutes, that isnt unusual. But just cruising around...thats a problem. the power loss was probably due to the egt sensor reading high temp and putting the car into failsafe mode.

How is your dealer about modded cars and fitted non-certified emissions equipment?

 

Whatever you do, you do not want to replace that catted UP with another stock catted UP, because they do fail and take the turbo out. You want to fit either an OEM catless UP from a later LGT / WRX / STi or go aftermarket. If your dealer is going to do the work on warranty but refuse to fit a non-stock part, you're wasting your time trying to get them to step up.

This situation cannot possibly be good for your car. Unless the dealer is willing to step up now, get it sorted yourself. If they won't do the job on their dime, then get it done elsewhere and shove the obviously defective cat down their collective throats at your leisure.

as much as i would love to do that i don't have the money right now more an up pipe and installation. my local subaru specilist shop quoted me 574 plus tax for a complete perrin up pipe install. i just don't have that money right now

i did hit high boost for like 20 seconds but didn't lose power until about 15 minutes later

Gut the stock uppipe. DIY for the cost of gaskets and anti-sieze grease.

So less than $200 for an up pipe and these "specialists" are charging you $374 for installation? Fred Beans rate for an up pipe install is less than $200.

 

I think they must only specialize in making money. :lol:

they quoted me 229.99 for the pipe, 5 studs at 3.95/stud, the gaskets 70.00 and 3 hours labor at 85.00/hour. so 574.74 less tax and misc shop supplies

 

it would be less if i bought my own pipe, but im looking to get it done as quickly as possible, they can get the pipe the next business day. shop is Precision Tuning by the way.

 

or i could let SOA buy me some time and have the pipe replaced for nothing and do the up pipe and down pipe at the same time

You can have a job done for you with any two of the following attributes:

 

Fast turnaround

Quality work

Cheap price

 

If you want all three you have to turn the wrenches yourself.

well i know this shop is quaility work and a quick turn around....and the labor rate is certainly not rediculous, i just don't have the money right now. id rather have SOA replace it for now and when i can put the money together then i will have a catless put on. my other motive is that if a piece of the cat does break off and damage the turbo i can get SOA replace that too because it failed because of a failed waranteed part. if i just throw a catless up in there and there is turbo damage how am i going to get SOA to pay for it? right now the freebee option is looking to what its going to have to be for now

SOA does not seem to operate on the same logic as the rest of us. Lots of people have had a warranty replacement turbo take out a whole engine, and SOA have left them out in the cold. Count the chickens after hatching for more accurate results. ;)

still, i can have the pipe replaces for free right now and then change to a catless when i get a chance, and who knows, there could be a TSB to change it to the newer non-catted up pipe. which would still be covered by them because of the 8/80k catalyst warrantee

A red-hot glowing cat is an indication of unburnt fuel ending up in the cat so do yourself a favor and also check that you have ignition on all cylinders. A dead coil or so will ruin the rest of the cat system too.

 

I have experienced that on my first Legacy - a '92 where the ignition control box failed making the engine run on only 2 cylinders. Luckily I was just around the corner from home so I could get it home and fix the box.
