Gettin subs, and need a deck

I don't have a Legacy yet, but I've done a lot of research on the matter and from what I've come up with you can install a new headunit of your choice but it is a bit more complected than most cars.

 

-If you have manual temp controls (2.5i/2.5i SE) You can just get a dash adapter from Crutchfield or other sources, price will range from about $30-60 and then get the appropriate wiring harness.

 

-If you have auto temp controls (2.5i Limited/2.5GT) The temp controls and radio are one unit so you have to either deal with the stock headunit or you can purchase a JDM temp unit with double DIN cutout. These run about $350. Then you will either need to purchase a double DIN headunit (which typically are quite a bit more expensive than single DIN units) or get a generic adapter to fit a single DIN and cubby in a double DIN space.

 

From there most everything should be straightforward.

 

On a side note, the couple Legacy sedans I test drove all had a cutout on the rear deck that looks like it could fit a sub, I think some cars have a factory sub in the rear deck. This may be an idea for a stealth install but you would either have to manufacture a custom box to mount under the rear deck or get a sub capable of free-air use.

 

~Disclaimer... As I said earlier I do not have a Legacy, but have only done research on the matter as I have never been happy with stock sound.

I just did a deck this weekend. I have to replace the Harmon Kardons according to three different experts(and also what i know). The harmons are low end and do can not support the higher powered deck so I am going to research an upgrade to the 7 speaker system. That is another issue you may run into. I also am an audiofile and know that for the perfect system (if one exists affordably) that it is a staged process. I initially did Rockford Fg subs and amp but now I may also need to uprgrade those as well....lol. Maybe ill post on craigslist to subsidize my upgrade.

If you're only doing subs, have you looked at getting some RCA line converters to hook up an amp and do a search for the jazzy mod for the iPod integration?

If you must have a deck, the most common solution is to get the AVO mount that utilizes the cubby and fits any single DIN, then run your own wiring from there. You do have to cut out part of a beam behind the cubby to make it fit, but it is doable.

I believe the factory sub install under the driver's seat.

 

I personally went with a JL Audio Cleansweep to get a cleaner signal from the factory head unit to a 5 channel amp and ran all new speaker lines to components in the front, new speakers in the rear and a single 12" sub in the trunk. If I had done more homework before, I probably would have went with a Kenwood system that can also integrate nav, satallite radio, and dvd from the same unit. (Actually I think that came out like 3 months after I did mine.)

I just basicaly did what you need. Its quite simple if you can live with the stock subaru radio. Theres a few variations on how to do it of course. First off I got the Jazzy aux-in (60ish dollars) this allows you to play anything via a headphone jack that plays a blank disc on your CD player. The quality is perfect no scratchiness or anything. You could do a cleansweap but another cheaper option in the MTX RE-Q or the 5 channel MTX (70-150 dollars) It will take the signal from a speaker and convert it to what you need and get rid of the bass roll off. And from there you can get your woofer amp/ speakers amp and what not. But if you want to get a double din aftermarket the JDM panel is really the only choice or go with a AVO single din in the upper compartment and relocate your deck up there.

I put one of these in my leggy and it sounds awesome. Like it was built into the car. I bought it from a local car audio specialist but they are for sale online. The only thing is you need to buy 2 fm wire changers. The audiovox is meant for round fm wires and the leggy has square ones.

+1, I basically did all the setups. Originally did the cleansweep but was not satisfied with the sound. Eventually got the AVO kit in the Cubby with an Alpine Head and called it a day . The rest of the system had been significantly altered as well but it took me almost two years to complete.

Factory sub is under driver's seat and uses a high input that has a t-harness into the radio. Basically as everyone said, if you want to replace the double din, only option is to order the Japanese conversion kit (which is not a PERFECT match as you have to relocate your flasher and such to accomadate a RHD setup, but controls and everything work properly)

 

If you are an audiophile (which it seems like) you will want to do a full upgrade and either do the single din uptop or a cleensweep type install. As for me I bought a used sub out of an STI and modded the harness to plug right in. Addes enough bass for me, but I'm no audiphile :D
