Keep in mind that with this post, I am not condoning speeding, and really don't want to get into a big discussion about speeding here on this thread. No one should drive recklessly or in an unsafe manner - Everyone should drive safely. ALWAYS. PERIOD.

Well, summer is just around the corner, and it's getting to the time to start enjoying a nice drive outside with your favorite car. Unfortunately, the warm weather brings speed traps as well, and the hassle of tickets, fines, and worst of all, insurance premium hikes!

I am sure many of you have radar detectors and laser detectors, but what do they really do for you? Radar is still being used for speed enforcement, but as you already know, many states are moving to laser speed guns these days. Unfortunately, laser detection is a losing proposition, at best. As many tests have shown, even the best laser detection device cannot give you any real warning to laser - the best the can do is tell you you've just been hit. When it comes to getting a ticket, what good is that?

From http://www.speedzones.com/Laserdetection.html: “In our trailing vehicle test we selected the best detector for laser alerts, the Valentine One. It was placed at the 1/4 mile cone behind the target vehicle at 1,000 feet. In ten tries the Valentine One did not give any advanced warning to laser being aimed at the vehicle in front of it.”

So what can we do? Well, fortunately for most of us, laser jamming is still an option, since it’s technically just the transmission of light, and so it's not an FCC controlled transmission like radar jamming is. I say “most of us” because some states (as of this posting) have specifically banned laser and radar jammers, namely California, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Colorado, Utah, Virginia and Washington DC.

So, for the rest of us there is…

THE BLINDER M-20 XTREME LASER JAMMER GROUP BUY

So, after this long preamble, I offer you the Blinder M-20 XTREME Laser Jammer Group Buy. The Blinder laser jammer is the highest rated, best defense to laser speed guns available today, as proven by many independent tests, including:
  • Speedzones.com has tested the blinder for a few years, and has shown it to be effective against all laser guns to date. The latest 2005 test can be found here http://www.speedzones.com/counter.html and continues to show the Blinder's excellent performance in this field with a 92% jamming efficiency! The next closest was 86% by the Bel/Escort, and the rest of the field averaged a jam efficiency of only 17%.
  • Radar test's last test (http://www.radartest.com/article.asp?articleID=8502) gives it 5/5 stars and said "it was the only unit to jam both the Jenoptic Laveg and Riegl LR235/90P to point-blank range, a remarkable feat" and that it was "definitely the best overall jamming performance of any model tested".
There are plenty of other positive reviews of this product... so, feel free to search for your own information, if you wish. Keep in mind, some reviews state some issues with previous versions, like the M-10 version, which only had one transmitting module (and some other issues, apparently). The M-20's dual transmitters along with other internal improvements have eliminated these issues, making it the best jammer out there today!

Of course, just jamming blindly isn’t very helpful, either. For this reason, the M-20 jammer first detects the laser gun, just like a quality laser detector would, and warns you about the threat as well. Of course, the Blinder is more effective than a cabin-mounted laser detector, since it’s transceivers are located closer to the areas targeted by the laser guns (headlights and license plates, typically). And, of course, while it’s warning you of the threat, the Blinder activates its jamming circuitry and try to jam the laser speed guns, giving you a chance to react. This way, you’ll know it's working, you’ll know when it’s active, and you’ll know when you've been hit. (For those interested, there are some nice videos of the Blinder in action at Radarbusters located at this webpage: http://www.radarbusters.com/products/blinder/default.asp.)

THE DEAL

So here's the deal: I am hoping to setup a group buy for the Blinder M-20 kit across a few of the forums that I frequent. A quick Froogle search I performed on 3/1/2006 shows a few vendors selling the Blinder M20 for as low between $325 and $350 with varying shipping costs. (In all honesty, I noticed that one vendor sells it for $285, but they aren't rated very highly, and this price doesn’t include shipping, so there’s still some risk to go that way.)

Through my conversations with the manufacturer, I have secured an arrangement for a Group Buy and can offer this excellent product for $280 + 15 shipping (within the US only) as long as I can get at least 7 people to sign up. In other words:

$295 SHIPPED!

What you get is a Blinder M-20 X-TREME kit that includes:
  • 2 Transceivers with integrated laser detector / jamming
  • All electronics concealed by epoxy
  • Smart new snap-lock for easy replacement of lenses
  • Single cable connector for easy plug-in to Cabin Interface Module
  • Transmitter type: 2 x 8 infra-red special manufactured jamming diodes
  • Detector type: 2 x 3 IR special manufactured photo diode with amplifier
  • Microprocessor with stealth jamming technology
  • Operating Wavelength: 904 nanometers
  • Physical dimensions: 103 x 50 x 18 mm
  • Power Requirements: 12.2 volts
And the Cabin Interface Module for connection of up to 4 Laser Transceivers, which includes:
  • Output to car stereo telephone mute
  • Output to light indicator (green) for power on and (red) for laser alert
  • Output to audio laser alert 95 dB
  • Output to on/off switch
For those interested in more than one kit, to protect the rest of their vehicles, we can ship a total of three M-20 kits under the same $15 shipping charge (to the same address, of course.) In other words, up to 2 additional units can be bought for $280 each.

GROUP BUY DETAILS (and the obligatory “legalese”)
  • The product will be shipped to each customer directly from the manufacturer, so that there will be no further delays or additional costs by shipping to me first.
  • The manufacturer will stand behind their 2-year warranty, as printed on each box.
  • The manufacturer will provide customer and warranty support directly to each customer, so this is not some grey-market or other such deal. This way, you also won't have to wait on me for support issues, though I am happy to help in any way I can.
  • This product does require installation, which will be handled by the purchaser - installation is NOT included. Installation requires basic electrical tools, just like you would need to install a car stereo.
  • Installation will require mounting the transceivers on the outside of the vehicle, near the front headlights and plates. Proper mounting is critical to optimal operation, so your installation (and hence, performance) may vary, of course. Neither I, nor the manufacturer, will be held liable for improper installation and/or any damage to your vehicle.
  • For those interested, a copy of the installation manual can be found here: http://www.filelodge.com/files/hdd6/125069/M20%20Manual.pdf
  • California, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Colorado, Utah, Virginia and Washington DC have specifically banned radar and laser jammers, as I mentioned before. For this reason, I will not ship to addresses in these areas. I simply don’t want to deal with potential liability and legality issues in these states.
  • Neither I, nor the manufacturer, make any claims as to the legality of these jammers, and therefore we cannot be held liable for the use of these jammers, as the laws are constantly changing and out of our control. As of today, only the aforementioned states list laser jammers as illegal. It's up to the owner to continue to determine the legality of these devices in their localities.
  • Payment would be made to me for this deal, and accompanied with a ship-to address. I will coordinate all of the purchases and I plan to issue a one-time purchase from the manufacturer for these items.
  • I plan to accept Paypal payments only, for the full amount of $295 shipped per unit.
  • I will not ship any units until I get at least 7 purchases lined up, as this is the minimum quantity required to secure this price.
  • After 7 units are spoken for, I will leave the Group Buy open for a little while longer (depending on the interest for these units). If things get out of hand, I will certainly see if we can break up the shipments into a few batches, while keeping the same price going. But, I don't want to get too far ahead of myself yet!
For those that read the kit contents or the installation instructions carefully, you may notice that the cabin unit can accept up to 4 transceivers. This is because there is also a Blinder M-40 XTREME kit, which comes with 4 transceivers. The M-40 is often recommended for larger vehicles (trucks, etc) as they can have more reflective surfaces to deal with (chrome grilles, etc). If anyone is interested in the M-40 kit, drop me a PM and we can discuss this further. For cars, the M-20 is just perfect.

Send no payments yet! I will notify the purchasers of when to send the payments (I will probably start collecting payments just after the 7 are spoken for, since this is the quantity that secures our price.) For now, just let me know you are interested here on the forums, so we can get an accurate count.

Due to the nature of the pricing and quantities, I make no guarantee that this group buy will "definitely" happen... hopefully it does, but only time (and interest!) will tell.

So, that's the deal for this Group Buy... $295 shipped as long as I can get at least 7 people to sign up. $280 for up to 2 additional units, shipped to the same address. So what are you waiting for?

Of course, if you have any questions, let me know, and I will answer them as quickly as I can.

Illegal in Cali? WTF? <---- A "WTF" of surprise, not of doubt in your statement.

Honestly, I thought that since these things fell under FDA rulings - and not FCC - they were completely and totally legal.

If his vehicle was impounded, I'd imagine that it was for reasons other than the jammer...possibly speeding enough that it was considered street-racing, public endangerment, etc.

Please elaborate! Thanks!

-----

heightsgtlgt -

Perhaps you're thinking about various supposed "radar jammers?"

Actually, efficacy of the active laser jammers - the few that work, which includes the Blinder units - is quite stunning. Many independent tests prove this to be the case.

Note, however, that not all jammers are equally effective against all laser "guns." Similarly, "breakthrough" of the jamming signal is possible depending on various circumstances. Thus, it's not a guaranty of stealth, just an extra layer of protection.

That said, the Blinder is a very effective unit, and among the best available today. And honestly - note that I'm speaking of this as a LGT.com member who is *not* participating in this buy-in as I already have an active jammer combo of my own - the above price is *excellent*.

Ah! Upon further research:

Quote:
"Radar Detectors are illegal in cars in Virginia and the District Of Columbia. Radar jammers, and possibly other devices like IR-absorbing license plate covers, are explicitly illegal in California (VC §28150), the District of Columbia, Oklahoma (47-11-108), Minnesota 169.14(12), Utah (41-6-52.7), and Virginia (46.2-1079). The FCC claims even "passive" radar jammers are illegal under federal law; see their 1997 opinion and order in the Rocky Mountain Radar case. This order was affirmed by the tenth circuit court of appeals in October, 1998 (Rocky Mountain Radar v. FCC, 158 F.3d 1118; cert. denied 119 S. Ct. 1045 (1999))."

California law VC section 28150

28150. (a) No vehicle shall be equipped with any device that is
designed for, or is capable of, jamming, scrambling, neutralizing,
disabling, or otherwise interfering with radar, laser, or any other
electronic device used by a law enforcement agency to measure the
speed of moving objects.

(b) No person shall use, buy, possess, manufacture, sell, or
otherwise distribute any device that is designed for jamming,
scrambling, neutralizing, disabling, or otherwise interfering with
radar, laser, or any other electronic device used by a law
enforcement agency to measure the speed of moving objects.

(c) Except as provided in subdivision (d), a violation of
subdivision (a) or (b) is an infraction.

(d) When a person possesses four or more devices in violation of
subdivision (b), the person is guilty of a misdemeanor.

(e) Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a person who has a
valid federal license for operating the devices described in this
section may transport one or more of those devices if the license is
carried in the vehicle transporting the device at all times when the
device is being transported.

Looks like it's definitely the case that laser jamming is illegal in CA.

aldouse - Sorry to hear that your friend found out the hard way. That's why I won't sell to people in those states.

heightsgtltd - I too was skeptical at first, but we all know that active jamming works on radar or laser... except that radar transmission is FCC controlled, so it's illegal to do so. Laser, on the other hand, is not, which is why in many cases, it's allowed. The webpage at radarguys that I mentioned has some REALLY nice videos... I urge you to take a look... pretty impressive.

TSI - thanks for doing the research... I was wondering what the actual text of the law was.

^ No need to thank me! If it weren't for aldouse's tale, I would have been ignorant to the fact that such an item is a big no-no in CA! The credit should go to him!

A friend of mine has four of the receiver/transmitters installed.. every time we have gone past a cop shooting Laser, the thing is set to audio alert and when we go past the cop, they usually have a "WTF?" look on their face.

^ I can attest to that as well.

I like to switch off my Shifter as soon as I have reached sufficiently reduced speeds that the enforcer would likely "let me slide."

Some makes/models offers an "auto-off" feature after active jamming for a set time-frame.

The M20 is awesome, not just another snake oil product. Unfortunately, out of the budget right now, regardless of the great price. Also, I'm looking to get escort or beltronics unit to integrate with my detector.

Now do a group buy on some veil and I'm in.

Anyways, good luck with the GB and bump for a great product at a great price.

I've got to say that I've had personal experience with the Bel laser shifters and have to say it is worth the money as it has saved me a number of times.

It seems more and more law enforcement are using laser now and though a lot of radar detectors can detect them, I can pretty much tell you that, if you've detected laser, it's too late.

The only unfortunate thing is you can't move it easily from one vechicle to another. So you can count me in on the group buy.

Keep me updated on status.

Ok, finally starting to see some interest here. I cross-posted this among a few of the forums I frequent, so I was hoping this would have been all said and done by now, but there are a few takers on this deal, at last. (Only one here on this forum, though!)

I figure a few more may be interested, as tax season is almost over now, so people should have some refunds to spend so let's keep it going a little longer and see what happens, shall we?

I only have 4 total takers so far, so it's not a done deal yet... all we need is a few more... let's get on it people!
