Footwell Lighting Walkthrough

Not sure if this should be here or in the walkthrough forum, but I recently installed footwell lighting that is tied into headlight position to be on only when the dash illumination is on (parking or head lights). It only takes an hour or two depending on your skill level with wiring. Let me know what you think.

1. Gather the materials

15" Flexible LEDs from Autozone ~$20 (they come in red, white, and blue)

Fuse Tap from Autozone ~$6

Random wire connectors for grounding

2. Disassemble the center console and take off the dash endcap on the driver's side. Directions can be found in other walkthroughs

3. Place the LED strips on the underside of the dash with the wired ends toward the fuse panel. The double stick stuff that came on these wasn't very sticky so I used some black duct tape to help.

4. Run the hot wires to the fuse panel area and connect them to the fuse tap (see the first pic that shows what a fuse tap is). I routed the passenger side one through the center console to hide the wire, but the wire was a tad short, so I had to add more wire to get it to reach all the way over.

5. Ground the negatives.

I placed the passenger side one on one of the connectors for the ECU cover plate

And the driver's side on a bolt near the fuse panel

6. Disconnect the Illumination fuse. Its a 10 amp fuse almost directly in the middle (the top one in this pic, the other tap is for my boost gauge)http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/flat4LGT/Lighting/DSC01036.jpg

7. Put the 10 amp Illumination fuse into the fuse tap along with a spare 10 amp fuse. I took the spare one from the fuse panel under the hood. and put the fuse tap back into the fuse panel in place of the original fuse.

8. Test it out. Make sure that everything is working properly before getting it all tied back down. With the key in the on position, and the headlights off, the LEDs should be off. Simply turn the headlights one click to the parking light position and the LEDs should come on.

9. Put it all back together and you should have something like this.

Any feedback and questions are more than welcome. Leave the "its ricey" comments at the door though. Footwell illumination kits are available from the factory from almost every manufacturer this one is just cheaper.

Nice thread!

I´m thinking of making a similar project.

I want the footwell to light up when I open the door and go out when the doors closes again.

Do you have any tips or hint about that? It´s a Legacy 2008.

All I can say is to find a fuse that's hot when the dome lights are lit. Use a circuit tester to find a fuse that isn't on when the dome lights aren't and one that is hot when the dome lights are on. It would probably take a few guess and check attempts to find one. That's what I had to do for my boost gauge.

Update after driving it at night. It looks great, but on the dark back roads, there is reflection on the driver's side window. I could see my red illuminated shoe reflected in the bottom corner of the window, by the side mirror. Not an issue when there is ambient light around via streetlights and buildings, etc.

Wow OP thanks for posting this pic. I have been considering doing this but seriously, I am not ready to keep my carmats uber clean for this mod... Hmm... Maybe I'll just do a lighted cupholder:spin:

I should have he wife pop out some kids so I can give them car cleaning duties.

EDIT: I am not bagging on OP, I am serious as my feet seem to be a DIRT MAGNET!

Anyone know where I can plug in my FootWell lights so it switches on and off

With that little whose light on the front doors? It would be optimal.

The Domelight has "two positions". One "full-lit", and "half-lit".

I don´t know if the car puts out 6V on "Half-lit" and 12V on "ful-lift".

If that´s the case it´s not very good for the LED strip.

So the Whose light in the front doors remains :)

  • 4 months later...

<a href="http://s4.photobucket.com/albums/y112/salvadorian/?action=view&current=DSC_0978.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y112/salvadorian/DSC_0978.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

did this earlier today, except i didnt take out the center console. theres actually a gap between the footwells and used a hangar and tape to pass the wire. GOOD write up though!
